Unorthodox blend pot wiring

I have tried to find the answer all over the internet, and then, it hit me! Where else to find the answer for my bass than TalkBass. com!!

I am trying to wire a blend pot to facilitate one input and two outputs. I understand how to wire a blend pot in the traditional way, but, I think that this method of wiring is going to take a more thorough understanding of how a blend pot works. I will be using Dimarzio P HB'ing PUs going to coil tap switches and one of two going to a phase switch. From there, each PU wil be sent to a blend pot, then to two seperate outputs. One output will go straight to a jack, the other will be sent to an EMG 3-Band EQ, powered by 18v. From there, the EQ will lead to a 500k volume pot, which will lead to the output jack.

Any help in wiring the blend pot to facilitate the end result will absolutely MAKE MY LIFE!!!!!!!!

simple answer:

look at a normal blend pot wiring diagram (try stewmac's wiring diagrams). relabel the diagram input where it says output, and output where it says input. Wire the rest of your circuit to taste.

You may have some issues with impedance matching between the active and passive circuits.


To go a bit more indepth, can you please answer some questions regarding your setup for me.

1. What exactly is your pickup configuration? I do not know if you mean that you are using one, two, or more Dimarzio P's.

2. Not that its important, but are you using a standard P pickup or is it a Dimarzio Split-P, with each half of the P pickup being a humbucker.

3. what is your ultimate goal for the electronics, specifically with regard to the blend pot?

after reading your post, it sounds to me like you are trying to blend a passive and active EQ. I am guessing that you are using a Dimarzio Split-P (hence the desire for a coil tap). I am also under the impression that you are only using one P pickup as this is probably the most common configuration (and because you are trying to blend "one input to two outputs". please correct me if I am wrong.

I cannot believe that I didn't think of that. It's so simple that it has to work.

In response to your questions, I am using Split-P pickups, series/parallel switching and a phase switch. On each pickup, I will have a seperate output from there. on one pickup, the signal will come from the series, parallel switch. On the other, it will come from the phase switch. as of right now, there is no resistance on either pickup. The signal from each pickup then goes to its own dedicated blend pot. The neck pickup and the bridge pickup will have their own dedicated blend control. from the blend control, the two seperate outputs for each pickup will be one output directly to the output jack with no resistance on the circuit ( except for the blend control), the other output will be to the active 3-band. After the 3-band will be a master volume for the active signal. Both signals from both pickups (total of four wires) will terminate at a neutrik locking jack. I feel that there should not be a problem with impedance, but, with that being said, the blend controls will be 500k, the active EQ has 25k pots and the master volume will be 500k, to compensate for the humbucker. I know that EMG states that their EQ can be used with active or passive pickups. If you have any insight into any possible mistakes I am making, please let me know.

As the title says, I am not sure about ampedance, I sent the signal chain for a different kind of wiring on my 80-s model B.C. Rich mockingbird, which I am turning into a slap and funk Mo-sheen. I am hoping someone can enlighten me as to whether or not using two signal chains into one output jack, using different impedances, will cause any problems. I personally don't think so, but as my wife likes to remind me, I've been wrong before.
