Unusual Color Aerodyne?

I just ran across a Burgundy/Ruby colored CIJ Aerodyne Jazz Bass. It's identical to the all black versions, no pickguard, rear mount controls, P/J's and heavily carved body...... just a different color. I'm just curious how rare these are, I haven't seen another, and any specific details that anyone could share. Thanks in advance! Ken

The dark metallic red is somewhat common for the non-export models that have the pickguards. It would have been a limited run of the export (non-pickguard) type that got the red treatement, and I'm huessing this is before they went with the Strat jack as well, which was essentially a designed-for-Japan model that Fender decided to bring over for the US market.

Does it have the Strat jack, or 3 controls in like with a standard jack?

It does not have the Strat jack-plate, only the 3 controls and a standard 1/4" jack. It's IMHO a very pretty bass.

Right, so it's one of the earlier models that was for Japan, before they re-designed with the Strat jack for the export "American" model. Won't come across many of those, and my hunch is that it was never sold here and someone shipped it over from Japan privately.
