Updating a Fender 51 Precision Reissue

Haha. I agree with you there. I sold my PV that I had. Great bass, but the ash/maple combo was a little too aggressive for me. I think ash/rosewood or alder/rosewood would've been great though.
I think Jason Lollar does that too, and the SD shop said they would on demand.

I have that same SD pickup in one of my DIY SCPBs and, if it's lowered away from the strings, it tames the aggressiveness so it can sound more like the 'period correct tone' of the OEM pickup.
Could be. I have this one lowered all the way at this point, and have 1/8" between top of pole and bottom of strings, with strings fretted at last position.
I'm not unhappy with this, and "can vintage it up by rolling the tone knob shut," more or less.
Flats would help. some. It's a more aggressive pickup, and that's fine with me.

How do the different SCPBs differ in sound? I put a SCPB-1 (I think) on my home built and didn't like it until I put the Roto 77s on it.
Just looked and it is an SCPB-1. It was too bright before the strings and I even dropped it a long way into the body.

Chef, you are using nickel rounds, right? What about you Joe? I have a stock Sting that has GHS Precision Flats that I really like!
