upgrading a bass?

i was thinking of buying a cheap fender p-bass over the summer since I like the tone of the p-basses and i'd like to have a backup for my geddy.

i was thinking about upgrading the bass a little bit, adding some things in. but you see i am not some kind of master bass luthier, i'm just a 17 year old kid

so, what things do you think it would be possible for me to do to upgrade a standard fender p-bass? i was thinking:

- change pickguard
- change to dimarzio p's
- put in a badass bridge II
- buy some DR strings or whatever
- new tuners?

so what else do you think i can do?

If you like the tone then don't mess with p-ups and bridge, albeit the badass II is a good choice and will have less of an effect on tone than changing out the p-ups.

From your list, you'd looking at something around $200, unless you get a really good deal on parts. I'd rather put that towards a 'better' bass than altering what already is a solid performer.
