UPS ruined my weekend

I have yet to have a problem with them but I have read more and more stories about these companies, most are about UPS, and I'm pretty scared about shipping or receiving anything from UPS.

Something we did when shipping large scale r/c airplanes was use bus lines to ship packages which would be too expensive due to oversize surcharges if shipped by any of the big 3. I could have something sent by bus to the down town station and could pick it up 24/7, they never close. It's a haul down there from here and I wouldn't go at night alone or unarmed, but knowing it's waiting on me and not the other way round is worth some measure of hassle...at least to me it would be.

Sending stuff by Bus is great, we do it all the time for Christmas\birthday\etc gifts for the family, it gets there the day you ship and the price difference is little if not advantaging for bigger stuff.

It completely and totally depends on the driver and depots involved.

I moved a few months ago to a new location maybe about 20 miles from where I used to live.. Before I moved, I HATED Fedex with unbridled passion, disliked UPS because it was a crapshoot with them, and loved USPS.
Now at my new location? UPS is phenomenal as is Fedex, and USPS is utterly absolutely and thoroughly awful.

After everything I've heard about these 3 carriers, I'm inclined to agree with this. For me, USPS rules, FedEx is good, and UPS sucks. Location, location, location, I guess...

I had a new camera, a rather expensive Nikon, shipped to me via UPS. I called, or had the shipper call, to have them hold it for pickup rather than to try and deliver it to my empty apartment, when I would have to drive out and pick it up Monday. They told me doing that would take an extra business day, or weekend. I was confused because the package was still going to be at their local warehouse on Friday morning. I agreed and then just drove out to the local warehouse customer pickup. It was sitting there pretty as a picture. Even though I did not ask, the shipper refunded my two day shipping charges, since UPS told them I would not get it until Monday. I usually have very good luck with UPS.
