Double Bass Upton Bass Club

I was attending the "Jazz Camp" in Warwick, RI over the past week. Something went wrong with my Fishman pick-up, and, being less than an hour from Upton I gave them a short notice phone call asking for some help. I've had the bass for about a year and a half now, and I don't know what has changed in the dynamic (maybe familiarity ?), but the staff reacted in even a more comfortable welcoming family style than I'd known before. I had a great chance to spend some genuinely "happy" time with both Eric & Jack (the tech) as they went about the business of making sure everything was okay on my end... it was just nice. Not mentioning this attitude to you guys would just be wrong... with so many critical remarks about so many things it's just great to be able to report just one of the very positive things happening in our small community.... I have a bohemian with a deluxe top. They cleaned my Fishman and set me up with a loaner to insure I'd be covered... If need be during some immediately upcoming gigs.
So my new Upton Standard Hybrid will arrive on Monday. This bass will replace my 1st upright. A very fragile solid wood Chinese bass that had many flaws but did have a great tone. It will be an experience to play the the well made hybrid as apposed to playing the cheep solid bass. I plan to post some pictures of the Hybrid Bass. When I was doing my research I found lot of pictures of this type of model but most of them seemed to be from a few years ago and I would have liked to see more recent ones. I have not had a playable upright all summer so I am sooooo excited!!

Got the bass yesterday. Here are two pictures... I will try to take a few more in the next few days, but we have lots of clouds and rain so not much nature light. The bass is AMAZING by the way! and the finish is AMAZING, with beautiful wood gran on the top. Really easy to bow too. I will post more once I get a chance to play it a bit.

The stand/chair thing is a really cool design but it is made out of something like particle board not real wood at all. So I used spare varnish on it. The seems are so rough I never could get it to look like there is any sealer on. Hopefully I have it sealed well enough seems like most of my gigs are outside and sometimes even on the grass. It if does not hold up I will just have to steal the design and make a new one.
I have my 1st band practice tonight with the new bass...Yeah!
If the stool is actually made of exterior-grade MDF as claimed, it'll hold up fine outdoors. If you sand the edges a little it should take finish like the faces. Fibreboard's a completely different product from particle board - used right, it's pretty amazing stuff.
Well that is good to know... I just was scared when I felt the materiel it was made of and so I put spare varnish all over it. LOL! as long as holds up I love it, I will be sad if gets wet and falls apart. It probably would have been good if the manufacturer had some information in the box to "talk" about the material and maybe some instruction on putting it together as well. Any way it holds up the bass very nicely and I do like using it a stool as well! So I am glad I bought it.
Guys, I've been using the KC stand/seat for about two YEARS! I love it and so do the people I play for. MDF has not broken down or cracked. Thing is holding up beautifully even after all my outdoor gigs in the humidity. Once you put it together, it's tough to take it apart. I've never disassembled it. Easier to keep it together. If I'm forced to buy a smaller car, i might have to take it apart. I'm sure some sanding will facilitate the procedure.
I have an Upton Standard on order. ETA is December. As Bart Scott would say, CAN'T WAIT!
Congrats. Just played my Upton Standard from 2009 tonight for about four hours. Great bass, will never part with it. I also have an Upton Bohemian with a fully carved top and that bass is awesome as well, in a different way. (The two basses are about 100 miles apart from each other, as I play out of two locations.) I got the Bohemian by putting another Upton on consignment with them and it sold quickly for a good price. Great folks to deal with, the Upton people are.
