Beautiful! Is it that dark in person or just the lighting? The color on the website looks lighter. I will be making the trip in August...

Not sure which set Upton uses by default.
I can't really comment on the tension as I have nothing to compare to - my 2016 UB Standard laminated bass is the first and only one I've ever owned.
Call the guys at Upton, they won't steer you wrong. I have a 2008 Upton Hybrid, currently strung with Zyex medium. They sound good, but I would not consider them loud strings. The Helicore Hybrids I had on the bass previously were louder, but the Zyex is an improvement in tone.
In my living room I rattle the Windows & usually use a big rubber mute during practice. When I've taken the bass out to an acoustic jam I have to dig in very hard to be heard over multiple acoustic guitars and a lap steel.

As for me - I bought my Hybrid used in 2013, but I took it back to its birthplace for rib bumpers and a setup after I got it. If you're you are anywhere in the Northeast, the Upton Shop is accessible in a days drive or less and worth the trip.

It's strung with zyex strings, not sure the weight. Playability is amazing! Jack took a bit off the bridge when I got there to get the action nice and low for a lot of growl. Even volume across the strings, much louder than the rental I had before. IIRC, I ordered it mid-March, so it took about 3.5 months to build. Yes, the color is that dark.

For sure it can. I may have told this story earlier, but I'll repeat it to further your point. I was playing with my standard in a dimly light dive in Buffalo, and the bar tender (also an upright player) thought I was playing an eBay CCB with the black paint job.Lighting makes all the difference in the world.
After reading so much about Uptons online I checked them out at the ISB in Ithaca and was impressed in person. I also checked out some Shens and others while there, but I love that Upton are local/MIA and have that personal touch.
When I got home I emailed Eric to see if they had any used Standards in stock, but they did not. Luckily, I stumbled across one on craigslist a week or two later. The seller was offering it at a great price, plus it had some factory extras - the solo swoop, dot markers - and the ebony parts are beautiful. The tailpiece has a nice blonde streak.
As if the deal was not sweet enough, it also included an RS pickup, Ingles stand, a 'playing' stand, black haired German bow and quiver, bow case, Dlx Mooradian bag, bib, rosin, extra strings - everything I would have been looking for had I purchased one from Upton directly.
And to top it all off - I couldn't believe it! - after I handed over the cash, the seller gave me 5% back without asking.
I don't know if I was earning major bass karma, or cashing some in, but it totally made my day and I drove home with a big smile on my face. He said he was expecting some haggling, but the whole deal was so good I didn't even bother.
Anyway, I'm the happy fourth owner of Opus 224, 2010. She sounds great with Evah Pirazzis!
Up to this point I've been playing an old cracked up school-salvage Juzek that I've been nursing back to health with limited funds over the last 20 years. A beauty, but a little fragile feeling, so it's nice to have a new solid bass to take out.
When I got home I emailed Eric to see if they had any used Standards in stock, but they did not. Luckily, I stumbled across one on craigslist a week or two later.
