Double Bass Upton Bass Club

Counting myself a very happy member of the club with my ‘new’ to me 2008 Hybrid Deluxe #137. Specs are nearly identical to today’s Upton Brescian hybrid, with the exception of the round back. Tastefully ‘distressed’ by the original owner, who only used it for a handful of gigs each year. Can’t wait to get this out in a couple more months when outdoor gigs and jams return. You can read my full ‘new bass day’ post, with more photos, here: NBD: 2008 Upton Hybrid Deluxe

Equipped with the classy "soloist's fingerboard," which reaches almost down to the bridge, providing access to notes most people's arms are too short to reach.

Congrats! Loving my Bohemian Hybrid that i got delivered last year and it has recently become my "gut bass" which has been super fun.

What do you have on your Standard? Im really enjoying my Bohunk hybrid as well. It is funny how quickly you get spoiled. I remember being almost awestruck by the sound/resonance when I first got it. Not, it's just my bass. ;) Have to regularly remind myself to not take it for granted.

OP - whatcha playing now? Looks like a Kay in your photo. I'm really enjoying having my old ply Engle stung w/ guts, w/ Evah weichs on my hybrid.

Eager to see pics when you accept delivery. They still delivering them all via van?

I got Zyex Mediums on the Standard at the moment, but currently it is detuned and sitting in a corner :) Would love to try guts on that bass someday too, although the Zyex are pretty great in their own right. That bass is way brighter, so am definitely curious how it would process the gut sound compared to my hybrid which is much darker.

My 2 basses are set up so differently, that I have a hard time even comparing them. They are so completely different to play and hear.

Same. Even though they are both Upton basses, very different. The neck dimensions seem very similar, so switching between the two doesn't take much adjustment from an intonation perspective, but pretty much everything else is unique to each bass.

Try the Evah Pirazzi Weichs on your standard. I think they sound lovely - not as lovely as gut would, but still it’s a really nice sounding string.

NBD!! It arrived yesterday! 5 year old Upton Bohemian w/deluxe top. The grain in the top is beautiful, the stain is exactly what I was looking for, and the sound...oh my goodness!! Finally a low E that really speaks to me! Eric and the gang did a great job in their communication through the whole purchase and shipping process!

Glad you like it. Looks pretty similar to mine. Can we get a shot of the pegs/scroll?

Did you have it refinished, or did they just happen to have a 5-yr old bass in stock w/ the color you wanted?

I wonder how quickly you go from being THRILLED over it, to just thinking of it as your bass? :D

I've been exchanging emails with Eric for quite a while and told him a Bohemian Hybrid Deluxe was my "dream bass". About 6 weeks or so ago he emailed me that they had a trade-up and it fit what I had mentioned. And the rest is history! Apparently it spent the last 5 years being played in an orchestra in the NW so it's in amazing shape!
