Useless Things You've Learned

Every single thing I learned in chemistry class turned out to be useless TO ME. Valence, molar equations, reaction equations...never used a bit of it. Would have been far more worthwhile if they had let me take welding or advanced wood shop or electrical shop or auto shop or metal shop. However, those courses were all reserved for the guys who admin had decided wouldnt be going to college. I wasnt even allowed to take typing, because "you'll always have a secretary, or at least a typing pool".

Barber Shop would have been a good skill too!

Sometimes at night, before I go to sleep, I stare at the ceiling and wonder about all those people who graduated with graphic design degrees the year before the Power Mac came out.

You can get suspended just for riding a horse to school and tying it to the flag pole.

When i was in elementary school we spent couple years living near my grand parents. They had a rotund shetland pony so gentle you could tie a rope to her halter and she’d take you wherever you wanted to go. One year when school picture day rolled around, i went out to the barn and rigged her up to ride and took her to school with me that morning. I usually walked the half mile or so to school so no one noticed what happened. It didn’t take long before my mom go a call to come get me. I refused to get my picture made without Muffin. My mom scolded me but she was a softie and my dad was down in Louisiana flying for petroleum helicopters and only came home every other week so i knew I had a few days to talk her out of telling my dad a out what happened.
LSS, i didn’t get my picture made that year and lived to tell about.

As for things i’ve learned and never used? Most all my public school education. The usual stuff like the 3 r’s and typing, mechanical drawing and trig all came in handy later in life, but as is painfully obvious, while i made A’s in english i never paid enough attention to proper use of english to do any more than make grades, then forgot it almost as quickly as i learned it. There were others, chemistry, home economics which i only took because it was required. I already knew how to cook pretty good so i did well in that, but every bit of the rest i pretty much blew off except to maintain grades. I learned without learning if that makes any sense. Whatever it took to keep a 4.0 GPA, but things that didn’t interest me never stuck longer than required to make grades, then bye bye.

Reading this, I'm struck by how similar your approach to learning is to mine! I learn what I need to in order to excel at the task in front of me, and then promptly forget it.
