Using an amp (preamp) as input to Focusrite Scarlett Solo

I'm new to this home recording thing, and have been asked to lay tracks for a friend's project.
I just picked up a Focusrite.
If I plug my bass into my Genz Benz Shuttle, can I either
Take the XLR DI output into the mic input on the Focusrite
Take the Preamp out into the instrument input on the Focusrite

And if I could do either, which would be a better alternative?

I'd do the XLR DI. Then it will be easier to color the tone with DAW tools to go with mix.

You also have the option of plugging directly into the Scarlett. Then DAW plugins can process the sound as desired. It depends on your DAW software. Logic for instance has a nice amp modeling tool. Plugins can simulate various recording console strips. They can be expensive though.

But an instrument, line, or balanced mic level signal can be fed into the Focusrite. The balanced xlr mic input has a better noise and thd spec than the line or instrument inputs. They offer more gain though. Always tradeoffs.

I'd try the direct out first if you want the amps tone stage in your recording.
