Using EQ instead of compression

I hope I'm not asking to stupid a question 😅 .

I often read people use compression to get an even sound across all strings, but I'm wondering if a similar effect can ben obtained with an EQ pedal? I have a fairly simple setup, playing (now exclusively home) with a FGN boundary Mighty Jazz plugged into a cheap Warwick BC20. With all settings at noon on the amp, I feel the G string is much quieter than the other strings.

When using a Tech21 Strip with mids boosted at around 180Hz and 1k, with both HPF and LPF engaged, I feel the D and G string sound much thicker. Is this purely subjective, or does increasing those frequencies really affect the sound of those smaller gauge strings? Do you often use an EQ replace a compressor for this specific application?

I’ve found that a boost at 165hz with a flat bass and treble will even things out, but it’s not the same thing as compression. I would also suggest your pick up(s) may need to be adjusted
 
I agree that a small boost in low mids can thicken up D and G strings. Compression doesn’t really do this. It can make the strings more equal in volume but it won’t fatten up the tone the way EQ does.

It’s always worth looking at the pickup (or adjustable polepiece) height. If the G is weak, tilting the pickups so the G is closer than the others may help. On a P bass, this is trivial because of the split pickup.

I'll try to raise the pickups slightly on the treble side. I lowered the pickups quite a bit because I have noticed that, when working on slap technique, the strings have a tendency to hit the poles when i'm popping them because my right hand palm. Guess I'll have to work on my right hand technique as well :roflmao: !

I actually don't own a compressor. I wanted to try one last year and ordered the Empress Bass Compressor, but it made an annoying click sound at every activation so it went right back. I know you're not really supposed to switch a comp on and off quite often, but given the price it costs it was a dealbreaker for me...

Do you tend to stay down low on the neck? I'd be concerned about the same notes being overemphasized when played on the E and A strings.
But if it works for you, it's not wrong.

They are related but different.

EQ works primarily on the frequency spectrum. It allows you to boost or cut certain segments of the frequency spectrum depending on your tone goals. Cutting certain frequency ranges can definitely make the sound more smooth.

Compression works primarily on the dynamic envelope of notes. The note envelope rises quickly then levels off and starts to decay. Notes are made up of a spectrum of tones.

A compressor responds to any part of the spectrum that goes over the threshold. The amount of time it takes for the compressor to respond is determined by the attack parameter. There is also a parameter that determines how quickly the compressor reverses, recovers, or let's go. This parameter is called release.

With a longer attack, some of the initial peak of notes may pass without causing compression . Because the attack has a lot of high frequency energy, this will cause your sound to seem brighter. A shorter attack will cause the compressor to respond right away. If you lock down the leading edge of the note envelope, your tone will seem darker and smoother.

If you adjust the release parameter too slow, it will cause the sound to pump at certain tempos. Say you are playing a string of fast notes. The compressor locks down the front end of the first note, and does not recover before the following notes are played. Recovery does not occur until you stop playing for a short period of time. Then when you start playing again, the compressor locks down the front end of the first note.

The image above shows the first overtone peaking twice, which will cause the tone to waver a bit. The compressor can be used to smooth this waiver out so the envelope of the first overtone looks smoother. The result is the other frequencies will be caused to waiver by the action of the compressor. The result is the tonal balance will sound different.

But if it works for you, it's not wrong.
I usually play on all the fretboard but I get your point, I was thinking about it actually. I spent a little time noodling to check this, and it's not that bad on the E and A strings, but this is probably because of the way I play. I have noticed that I have a tendency to pluck lighter on E and A, and pluck a little heavier and closer to the neck on the D and G, with helps to even the sound (at least to my ears).
I still can’t figure out what a stupid question is.

A good set-up is the absolute best and only starting point...this includes lubrication of nut slots and checking that no strings are binding that can choke a string.

Many players never use a compressor, some have things that add subtle compression, others need limiting functions and a few place a device at different locations in the signal chain while still a smaller number use more than one compressor.

EQ is never a bad idea...

You know of course that your choice of strings also has a lot to do with that tinny or weak sound in the low notes of the D and G string. When I bought my '82 Jazz in 1985 it had a set of Dean Markley Blue Steel strings on it. These were actually the first round wound strings I ever played. My 1965 Jazz that I bought in 1966 came with Fender flat wounds and when I was touring in the early 70's, I put a set of Fender Black Nylon Tape strings on it. I used those strings and was quite happy with them until all my touring gear was stolen in 1976.

Of course round wounds were rougher feeling than flats, but that wasn't really a problem. The nice thing about them is they had a lot more of the upper harmonics than I was used to getting with flats. The bad thing was that the D and G-strings sounded week when playing low on those strings, for instance the E on the D-string and the A on the G-string. So instead of playing those notes on the 2nd fret of the D and G strings, I would play them on the 7th fret of the A and D strings to get more "body" in the note. I figured that was just the cost of getting the brighter sound they produced.

After replacing them 3 or 4 times, I gave DR Black Beauty strings a try because a friend was endorsed by them and he thought they were great. The balance of sound from string to string was better with the DR's, but I continued to play the needed notes from the lower part of the D and G string up on the frets above D an G on the A and D string. And then my Black Beauty strings turned into ugly mottled gray strings. Sound didn't really die, I just hated to look at what had been black strings that now looked like diseased strings. So I went looking for another option.

I have to admit that an SBL video convinced me to give LaBella Tape Wound strings a shot. Scott has done at least two comparisons of flats, round wounds, and taped and I think it was the first one he did. Through my Bose headphone they sounded more balanced than the round wounds I'd used and yet had a lot more of the upper harmonics than flats typically do. So I bought a set of LaBella Deep Talking Bass White Tape Wound strings from the store here on Talkbass. When I put them on, the sound was even better than I expected. Scott had used the Black Tapes and I ordered the White ones. The black ones are deeper and the white ones are the brightest of the LaBella tape wound string. Even more unexpected was the fact that the low notes on the D and G strings did NOT sound thin, wimpy, and weak.

The balance from string to string was great and I no longer need to go up to the 7th fret to play the E and A on the A and D stings. Playing them on the second fret of the D and G strings sounds almost exactly the same. At least it is close enough that I can play those notes on which ever string and fretting position is closest or most convenient, depending upon my hand position at the time.

If you are really trying to get a nice string to string balance of sound, I'd suggest you give the LaBella tape wounds a try. It may save you from buying a compressor. The White Tape Wounds are semi-opaque, so you can tell there's a silver core in them. The Black are totally opaque. Besides their Black Tape Wounds, they also make White with a Copper core, and White with a Gold core. Both of those are in between the sound of the white ones and the black ones but I haven't used them so I don't know which of the two is brighter or darker sounding. On my '82 Jazz that has an all-maple neck and 70's era pickup spacing (has a brighter sound than my '65 did), the White Tape Wounds are perfect for my sound. I think it would be worth a look for you.

Some do use compression for that, but I wouldn't. To get even response across all strings I'd look into proper setup (including pickup height), and after that, EQ settings. For example, I learned early on that mid-scooping (which can come from contour switches such as the Ampeg Ultra Lo) can make your low notes sound huge or piano-like, but can also make your high notes disappear in the mix.
