Using grains of rice for port tuning???

i did it with some unpopped popcorn and a sine wave generator on my phone fed to a power amp fed to my speaker cab, worked just fine and nicely confirmed that my amateur calculations on winISD matched up with my real world results, at the frequency i was supposed to have the popcorn did indeed stop bouncing around

popcorn kernels are easier to clean up than rice or especially sand afterwards
 
Seems that might be an argument for room-mic'ing (a good room). I gotta wonder - and I've never heard of this - is mic'ing the port of benefit? Of course, it's why I take a DI in parallel to whatever mic (I tend to use MD421 II, RE 320 or SM7b) into whatever pre (I like The Brick and Meeks, have used and liked 1176 straight in). And fwiw, lately I often don't use the DI at all by paralleling two different pres off of the mic - seems to sit pretty good with a bit of HPF, sometimes a lot.

Room mic'ing might be a viable approach when recording - it'll be a crapshoot as to whether or not the results are usable. I would never attempt in in a live setting - too many things to go wrong, and not enough time to troubleshoot it if it doesn't work.

If you want to mic both the port and the cone, go ahead. It will never be as good as a DI - the speaker doesn't have as extended response at low frequencies. You also have proximity effect, which, if you're close miking the port, will be considerable - there a lots of ways that close miking a port can go sideways. But if you like what you hear, go ahead. Again, I would never do this in a live setting - only recording.

When I have had people insist that I mic their cabinet, I've used a DI as the basis of the sound (to get decent low end) and mixed in the mic at higher frequencies (500Hz and above) to get some character from the cabinet. That seems to work well.
 
You should check out the videos of the ones where they put sand or rice on a flat plate and do frequency sweeps. Really cool.
I have a waterproof speaker that I cover with water then do a frequency sweep for science class.
The kids love seeing how the water bubbles and dances like a fountain at the lower frequencies, then make neat shapes and patterns in the higher.
