using Line6 GuitarPort instead of amp?

I'm far from ready to play in a band and don't want to blow hundreds of dollars on a rig since I may not need to for another year. Also I can't play my bass loudly in my apartment because of neighbours, so a friend suggested I get this:

It's affordable and would hopefully give me a better idea as to what sound I want when I'm ready to buy a full rig.

Anyone familiar with these? Feedback, comments?

well, a neighbour is selling a Yorkville 50watt amp for about CAD150. i may just get that since i'll spend the same amount for the Line 6. i'm afraid my small speakers won't be able to handle my bass if i don't use headphones so it looks like i either buy the Line 6 + monitors OR just get the practice amp for CAD150....

will look into the other option you mentioned too...thanx.

Hi bassbounce.

If the Yorkie works and has a headphone jack, get it.

When word gets out that you play bass, you'll be invited to jam sessions by nearly every bass-less band in town. Trust me.

Jamming is a great way to have fun and network with other musicians/future band-mates. :bassist: :)

Iwouldn't advise playing through like computer speakers or whatever, never sounds good and probably bad for them. Monitors? ick. Get an amp. Or get the line 6 and a decent speaker, not sure how many watts that is going to push though. There's a lot of nice affordable smaller combos what is your price range?

unless you have proper studio type monitors (which are probably more expensive than a practice amp) you are likely just gonna end up damaging your computer speakers and it will sound pretty horrible anyways (similar to playing through a hi-fi for example... gross!!) in the long run you are better off just buying a small practice amp or something more suited to live sound, unless you plan on doing some recording in the future...
