Using movie samples

Not sure if this is the best place to put this!

We're polishing up our EP and I wanted to add little sound clips before one or two songs from movies.

What does the law say about using these? Does it fall under fair use? Does it have to be stuff from public domain?

Anyone experienced in this? Thanks!

It is copywrited, so if you sell your EP than you have to pay royalties. If you give it away you should be ok. It is called "Clearing Samples". You used to be able to edit it 50% and you could get away with it. Like a lot of electronic/rap musicians do. New laws state that any sample whether you can recognize it or not must be cleared.
