V/V/T, V/T/S, or V/T/V/T/S?

Which do you prefer for a two-pickup, passive bass, and why?

Vol/Blend/Tone, so that I can turn down the volume with one knob.

Any of them work. I think V/V/T is more than sufficient for stage work, but V/V/T/T with a selector lets you get more precise in a controlled recording setting. V/T/S is workable, but in most cases I think less than ideal.

Two volumes and a selector also gives you a killswitch option.

Of these three options, I take V/V/T. I also don’t mind a blend, or V/T/switch in certain cases (e.g. Godin Shifter or Fender Tony Franklin).

I am not a big fan of separate tone controls or switches when there is already two volume pots. As much as I enjoy playing around with Ric basses, for example, I don’t get along super well with 4003 or 4005 control layouts.

V/T/V/T/S is popular with guitarists. I was curious to understand if it held any interest for bass players. It seems that it does.

I don't gig so changing settings "on the fly" is not a must for me, therefore 4 pots + switch is my preference. Fine tuning the sonic response of the instrument in the studio is something I enjoy...

Volume, Blend, Tone, I HATE two volumes: I get it just like I want it but then I can't turn up or down without screwing the blend. Nuts !

I like 2 plain stacked knobs.
If I played out though, I'd use Vol/Blend/Tone though for the reason listed.
On the bass to the left, I replaced the pickups and swapped in a blend knob to replace the dodgy switch.
That would be the bass I'd use.

A500K Volume / MN250K Blend only. Why i didn't need tone control ? Because tone pot add kill those crispness and growl i need !

I set up a bass once with V/V/T/T and I hated it! It sounded fine with everything wide open but if I rolled back one volume without matching on the other my tone got weird and I had trouble keeping it consistent.

All my basses are active with 3 or 4 band EQ. The only bass with two volumes has two totally separate preamps, one for magnetic pickups and one for the piezo, so they don't have any of the weird interactions I had before with two volumes on two magnetic pickups.

That’s what one of my closest friends prefers. I like a single volume control, but I understand why it’s not always the best choice.

I answered V/T/S because of the Godin Switcher, and also because it's closest to V/T/Blend--which was the configuration on my Jazz Bass Special, my first real bass and therefore the template for all of my expectations thereafter

That said, I could be the target demographic for a Joe Dart bass as I rarely change my passive controls from full volume & tone...

Normally, I would've voted "V/V/T", which reflects most of my basses, but recently, I experimented with a Heresy wiring harness on a couple of my basses. (re: 3-way switch/series-parallel/stacked volume-tone) I gotta say, the "set it and forget it" groove is strong with this one. Plus, having the ability to pop it over to series mode is really nice, should I want to bump the volume and mids a bit.
