Valerie - Amy Winehouse Slow Version

Haven't played this song for a couple of years.
What's great is it's a slow 96 or so Beats Per Minute and the bass lines are very clear.
As I recall it was simple enough to pick up the basics of the song from listening.
I did check Ultimate-Guitar for the tab but the versions available are laughably inadequate
with just the root notes given.
Have fun with it, sorry I can't be more helpful.

Thanks Mac Daddy - this is great.

I joined a band last summer and I needed to learn their 3 sets in 2 1/2 weeks for a show. Half of the songs I was familiar with and half I didn't know including this song that I never heard before.

I didn't have much time and my ear isn't great so I did the best I could. I had the Ab G part and the walk up to the Bb and walk back down to Eb again - measures 13-16 and the F to Eb connector in verse measure 4 but not the rest of the verse in measures 1 - 3.

As I mentioned my ear is not great but I could hear the 5th above so played that for the 1st 2 measures in Eb with my connector to the F being the 5th and 6th below back to root Eb and then the F with measure 3 being the root F 5th above and again the the 5th and 6th below the F root.

We played this song the first couple of shows and then put it aside. We are bringing it back so I'm tying to play it better as I have more time now to look more closely at this.

One thing, for me it's easier to play the F on the 4& beat of measure 1 on the 3rd fret D string with my pointer finger (same finger that plays the low G on beat 3) than on the 8th fret A string.

You're welcome! Sounds like you're on the right track, and I bet your ear is better than you think it is.

One note on the main pattern, and you probably already picked up on it, but the second note in bar 1 is an Eb the first time, then a Bb every time after that.

I love that little fill at measure 76 that ends in the double-stop. So cool.

Came very close to a serious train wreck on that song a few weeks ago at a wedding. Was told at the last minute to learn it, and did. Drummer decided to give it a run through at soundcheck (something we don't always do) and it's a good thing we did :). There are a lot of versions of that song out there. Who knew.

The one I learned isn't even the one in the OP, nor the most popular upbeat one. It's a sort of reggae version that was the first to pop up when I searched for it - now I can't even find it.

Sorry, I know that doesn't help you at all :). But it bumps the thread.

Write out a chord chart. Learn the changes. Once you get the changes down, lean your head back. Close your eyes. And get your James Jamerson on. This is not a note for note song. This is a grip it and rip it song. Feel your way through.

Such a shame about that girl. What a beautiful mess.

You're very welcome. I use Finale for charts, though most of the time I still do them by hand because it's so much quicker. Finale makes beautiful charts, but it's got a learning curve that seems to never quite go away for me. It's just not the most intuitive program.
