Vibram "Five Fingers" shoes

Ok, bringing this back up looking for some advice. I've finally gotten back into running full time the past few weeks, going out almost every day after work. And I've actually been doing it in my Vibrams. I can finally run a mile (ex-XC runner who hasn't really done a whole lot in the 3 years since high school), but after that my calves get really tight, and today basically my entire left leg below the knee got really tight about a half mile in, so I stretched a bit and walked and tried it again and got about another quarter mile before it did it again.

Now I'm not sure if this is solely due to my inactivity in the past bit and me just getting back into it, or from the shoes since I only wear them while running (I don't think khakis and Five Fingers go together very well). Either way, does anyone have any advice? Am I just pushing it too hard? I'm icing whenever it hurts, though not quite to the ice bucket level like in XC.

I'll second what others have said. You're probably over doing it. Make sure you stay hydrated and keep your potassium and magnesium levels up.

I've had my KSOs for about two months now. They make great "everyday" shoes but where they really excel is as an approach shoe. They're great for schlepping 30lb+ packs over third and fourth class terrain. Clipped to a harness or stuffed in a pack, they're far lighter and less bulky than other alternatives (tennies, flip flops, Chacos, Tevas, etc) but offer superior traction and performance. I'm fairly certain I could climb easy fifth class effectively in them.

They do have some down points. They take time getting used to. I had to develop a new achilles callous and lengthen a few of the toe pockets. They are adept at "Keeping Stuff Out" but small twigs will sometimes get stuck between the toes and you can't just stretch your toes to release them. They're not great for colder weather. I tried Injinji socks with them but it wasn't as comfortable...I guess that's what the Flows are for. They DO hold a funk but I simply hit them with Lysol after wearing them and throw them in the washer every once in a while.

Despite these drawbacks, I'm sold. I absolutely love them. Even the though the synthetic uppers have surprised me with their durability, I look forward to getting a leather pair.

Sweet! Glad you like them! :-)
This winter I was jogging in my Bikilas in snow that reached up well over my ankle. It was a bit cold first but then I got used to it. It's also pretty funny to see your footprint in the snow!

Based on you location, I suspect you have a greater tolerance to cold feet than me! :p

Well, i just jointed the ugly shoes club and got myself a pair of KSO!

I am going back home for the christmas break, and have to keep my cardio up for the European Brazilian Jiu Jitsu open in january.

Since i can't train at home i decided running was a good option. I fight and train barefoot, so it only made sens that i should try running barefoot!

I was never able to run much as my left knee is pretty dodgy. The whole ball off the foot running thing does seem o be gentler on my knee though.
I will give it a few weeks and let you guys know if an injured knee can survive barefoot running.

I was in Boston the other day. Me and my wife went to the Vibram store on Newbury street and both bought two pairs of five fingers!

I already own the KSO, Bikila and Speed. I now bought the Spyridon LS and KSO Trek which is a leather Five finger shoe!

My wife bought classics with paillettes and also Spyridon LS.

I absolutely love my Five Fingers!

I'm geting in touch with my inner-Filipino by channeling Imelda Marcos. :p

I usually love the minimal shoes. Other than my dress shoes they are all I ever wear. However, I have been hoofing in around Toronto for the last 3 days and my feet are jacked up, like really jacked up. I developed massive blisters just under my big toe on both feet, forcing me to walk on the outsides of my feet causing fairly severe tenderness in the ankle and soleus muscle of the calf.

I fully endorse the minimal shoes, but walking 10+ miles a day in them is probably not the best idea.
