Hello,

I have just bought a second hand V.B bass. When I attempted to change the strings with a heavier gauge the guitar didnt really take to them very well. the D string sounding almost muted.

has anybody came across this problem?

No, but a luthier once told me that acoustic basses are more susceptible to tonal anomalies with regard to twisting the strings when restringing. Try taking the D off and refitting it as straight as possible making sure the ball end is hard against the end of the pin and that the pin is well seated.

From my experience with trying out the victor bailey bass. Once in New York and once in Greensboro, The action comes good and low from the factory. I would imagine putting bigger strings on it would constitute raising the action. They play incredible from the factory with the factory size strings.

I'm currently sticking with the 045, .055, .075, .095 gauge that the VB ships with. Seems to keep any potential boominess from the E&A down.

Mine is strung with TI flats, has low action, and sounds pretty darn good. If only it was louder.

I took mine to get set up though, they did some bridge, nut, and fret work on it, and it plays like a dream.

Yep, pretty much my only quibble with it too. Recently did an acoustic rehearsal with 2 guitars and a piano and I had to plug the VB in to be heard.
