Ive been searching for a bass influence and being that there are so many: Jack Bruce (Cream) Cliff Burton (Metallica) Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath) John Entwistle (The Who) etc.. But I have found a amazing bassist that I have been hearing a lot about for quite awhile but waited so long to check him out. Hes been playing bass since he was 3 and did his first show at 5, hes amazing and hes my favorite bassist ever. Im talking about Victor Wooten. He puts so much feeling into his bass playing. Hes simply awesome. When he played Norwegian Wood from The Beatles (which I have been a fan of since Sixth grade) he captured the song wonderfully. I was blown away. Not to mention his Classical Thump or Bass Tribute or just about any other song he plays. I own 3 of his cds so far and I love them.

Good for you.

I too am a huge fan. I saw a show in Cleveland, along with the first ever SMV show in Cleveland.

Look into:
Stanley Clarke
Marcus Miller
SMV
Tal Wilkenfeld
Jaco Pastorious
Janek Gwizdala

All great influences on me.

Ah, another happy convert! Welcome to the club. Vic is indeed most excellent. I've been a fan for more than 20 years.

If you don't already have it, you'll want to pick up the Flecktones' "Live Art". Jaw-dropping musicianship by all involved.

And if you like his recorded works, go see him live. I guarantee he will blow your mind.

+1 Plus I went to his camp in Nashville in 2001. If you get a chance, go to his web site and apply. It will change your life. Cheers.

yeah, Victor Wooten is what they call a "bass god." I just got his "best of" book, I'm trying to play it...but jeebus he has some ridiculous parts. Some of his songs are doable, and others are not even attainable for me. I might have Classical Thump down in a few weeks if I really really work at it. It's insane.

Seeing him live changed me from thinking "Yeah he has great technique and all, but not that interesting" to "HE IS AMAZING!!!". The SMV thing works GREAT live, you can really feel the "thunder". He played this solo:
Does that piece have a name? That is one of the best bass solo's I've heard (the sound quality is crappy on that.)
It was kind of strange seeing the people who were waiting for the Brian Setzer Orchestra, in their rockabilly clothing (Setzer was performing after SMV) cheering loudly because of a bass solo! :D
