Video added: How do you know what's wrong with a driver

So you think it's completely done?

The voice coil, yes. I'm not trying to be the bearer of doom, but I'd bet $1 (or more!) that the VC is baking and on its way out every time you send power to it, especially if you're sending it any high frequencies at all (even as simple as a tone knob turned open on your bass). And at this point, not even flats on a Pbass with all the highs killed are going to make it go away.

That's too bad, Bryan and I completed the "JBL school" around the same time during the late 70's iirc. They ran a top notch recone facility and really knew their stuff.

I understand why they might have gone this route, I shut down my general installation, rental and service side of things for pro audio after 38 years because I was having a difficult time with unreasonable customers and got tired of constantly chasing payments. I am now only handling factory service for what's left of Genz Benz, and new product development for Mesa. Both of these brands have, from what I have seen over the last 10 years, a high class quality customer base that appreciates the efforts made on their behalf... which is appreciated by all of us in the support side of things.

Amen. Life is so much easier when you don't have to deal with unreasonable people.
Agreed, combine decreasing business with increasing unreasonableness and the decision becomes much easier.

I was considering doing a recone and recoil which I think all comes in the kit. I think that might be the best way to go.I wasn't considering keeping the speaker as is, but I was considering refurbishing it. I guess I wasn't clear about that part.

Their slogan is "Americas leader in speaker repair". Guess they might want to re-think that slogan :)
Yeah I think they're working on it now. At least changing some of it. They're doing well as they expanded into the GLS gear and have been growing recently.

I was definitely pointed to them quite a few times by folks in the area so I can understand the reputation and the quality of service. In the age of "I'll just buy another one" I can understand why they and you have made the steps you have. Its just sad knowing that is what's happening
