F-Zero: X (N64)

One of the best. Not often enough in people's lists. It wouldn't crack my top 10 but surely top 20. It's a shame the one they had on gamecube. It should have been great. It sucked. The gameplay was the problem. It just wasn't fun to drive. Tracks were boring. it was pretty much the nail in the coffin for the Gamecube for me and why I switched to xbox.

The Saboteur (another older game, like 3 or 4 years now..had skipped that one too...shouldn't have, great open world action in WWII paris. Its a mix of Assassins creed, hitman, GTA and Just cause 2 basically. Great fun. Probably third favorite open world action game of all time behind GTA series and Just Cause 2. And just like Amalur...dev folded after release. Though EA probably has the rights to it...wish they gave it a sequel)

I've never known anyone else to have this game! I remember seeing it full price when released, then not even 2 weeks later, the same store had every copy discounted to about $14! I thought oh wow this thing must REALLY suck to go that cheap so quickly. I bought it, tried it, and hated it; I just couldn't get over the cartoon-y graphics and ridiculously awful fake accents. The driving mechanics felt all wrong, too.
I let it sit for months then forced myself to try it again. I'm glad I did, because that turned out to be a great game!

I'm on ps2, 3, and occasionally pc. There's a 360 in the house, but it's strictly for my kid; I never touch it unless she gets stuck on a level or wants to go 2-player on one of the Lego games.
I'm considering splurging on either a ps4 or a new pc. The need is greater for the pc (it's not just for gaming), and with the Elder Scrolls Online coming out soon, it looks like I'll be a hermit for a while!

I could never get into the whole fps/call of duty thing. I like the big immersive rpg's that take months to finish. Gta, saints row (4 was godawful, though), assassin's creed, fallout, skyrim, etc.

We weren't cool enough for an Atari when I was a kid, oh no; we had the Atari knockoff Magnavox Odyssey. Pick Axe Pete, baby!

Then the Nintendo came out, and we got...a Commodore 128 computer (because "it's not just for video games.") ... ... (yeah, right). How many hours did I spend drawing out my own maps for all the Infocom text adventure games (ZORK!!!)? Creating and recreating the perfectly balanced 5-character questing party on Dungeons & Dragons Pool of Radiance? Good stuff.

Oh yeah. I recommended it to my brother but told him to give it at least two hours. Like you I was underwhelmed at first. But when the game really starts, then it gets good.

Have you tried Day Z? I haven't tried the stand alone version yet, but the mod for Arma II was spectacular.

You wake up on a beach, no explanation, you are in this massive map, a couple cities and numerous smaller towns. Other players are running around trying to survive too. No teams, so you have to trust (or murder) your co-players and lots of zombies!

Excellent survival game, there is no story so-to-speak, you just want to try and survive as long as you can.

I was going to tell him that but I couldn't remember the name of the game for my life. Thank youuuuuu

Funny how i'm nostalgic about pretty much everything except video games. Well I mean I am nostalgic in some ways, thinking back of those memories, but as far as i'm concerned the best games are still always ahead. Sure theres some games from the past I wish they still made, but I wouldn't play them again. It's more, I wish they made a sequel/updated those games.

Have you tried Rust? Its no longer a zombie survival game as they have removed the zombies, but it is a great survival game where your greatest enemies are other players. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't.

I meant to forever. I even dled it and all. then I never got around to it.

I have to say I don't like multiplayer games very much though... I've watched lengthy videos of it anyway.

It's a bit rough around the edges (but that may have been more to do with my PC being a bit dated now and ARMA II being fairly resource heavy).

Certainly worth a bash, you can play in smaller servers and you might not even see another player

mostly ps3 gaming recently. just finished a huge run thru of skyrim including the first 2 DLC's, took a break and played thru uncharted 2 in one sitting. currently playing thru Darksiders 2, if you like god of war an zelda I'd suggest darksiders to you. great game. comic book art style, can't sing it enough praise.

on the ps2 i'd greatly suggest final fantasy 12. it takes a long time to get going, but once it does it's a great game.

the new metal gear solid is out, mass effect series is always worth a play thru.

it's a great time to be a gamer.

I'm mostly a pc gamer at the moment, though my gf owns a ps3 that I play a bunch as well. Titles like Dishonored, Skyrim, Arkham City, and Katamari are some of my favorites lately. I'm also a big fighting game fan and own ssf4ae, mvc3, mk whatever the current one is (though I'm awwwwful at it lol) and, my favorite, ssbb. I used to be active with my local college's gaming club, and all of us smash players would go on road trips together to tournaments and represent our college. Good times. I still get together with people from the club and have smash nights so we can keep our chops crispy.

My current obsession though, and I'm surprised no one's mentioned it yet, is League of Legends. It's a multiplayer battle arena style game where you pick from a huge list of characters and play on a team with others to kill the enemy team and take objectives. It's incredibly fun, though the community can be harsh.

Haven't enjoyed console games since the PS2. Everything coming out now is another carbon copy FPS, which is a huge bummer for me as I grew up playing video games constantly and the creativity seems to be gone from the industry for the most part.

That being said, Wildstar is coming out pretty soon and that looks like it will be sick.

I used to play a ton of strategy games and RPGs. Not much on that front these days. My favorite games are Gothic 2, HoMM III and V, Warcraft III, and I like Civ V quite a bit. Recently I've been playing a lot of FTL with brief spurs of Path of Exile, and in the last few days, Diablo 3. Patiently waiting for Witcher III and the FTL expansion.

I play on a gaming laptop as I moved over continents recently and, well, needed to buy a gaming rig that I can bring along with me. It's okay and all, but I can't wait to build a proper rig once this laptop gets behind the times.

Since the holidays, the only things I've been playing have been Rocksmith and Bandfuse on my PS3, which are more bass practice than game. Before that, I got to the end of GTA V, and before that, I took a long break from games; I tend to do that every so often. I think the game before GTA V for me was Journey, which was incredible.

At the time i ranked it in my fav rpgs ever but it was knocked down some positions since (notably by Oblivion and Kingdoms of Amalur). I have to say i never tried the Gothic games after that (and whats that other similar series the publisher started after...forgot the name now.. i think it had some people from gothic working on it). They were released with loads of bugs and i never tried them after the patches.

And like you i'm anticipating Witcher 3 a lot. To be honest i tried the first one and couldn't get into it. But now this is going to be real open world... I think i could really like it.



Heres a few of my fav games of all times in no order since i didnt make a list before. Im gonna try for a top 30 but including series as a whole when it applies This goes as far back as the N64. I played snes and NEs for years to death but i don't know that many games in there could realistically still crack my top 30 games of all time... even on the strength of nostalgia.

I think that's 30. And pretty much the best of gaming in my world from 1990 (Red Baron) to 2013. A top 50 would see more older PC games (maybe the Sierra Quest series for one, and wing Commander proper) and Nes (river city ransom, Iron Tank, Castlevania II) ans Snes (F-zero, Star Fox, Street Fighter II, Mario Kart) games as well.


Edit: Just thought of Mount and Blade. I should kick some other game off the top 30 to replace it with that. I knew this would happen.

I'm not in to MMORPG's anymore. I played World of Warcraft for a while after the Cataclysm expansion. I really enjoyed it, but quickly realized you can't get squaddoosh without raiding. So I canceled the account and never looked back. Since that's the only way to get good gear, I'll likely never do online games again.

Yeah i put DC universe online up there but i'm usually more a loner gamer. This is the only mmorpg i ever really played. It took me forever before i finally went into what is the equivalent of raids in that game because i dont like to have to rely on other people in games and have to be social just so you can do these kind of things and get better gear. I was a lone wolf for as long as i could pull it off and still move forward. I basically liked the game but didnt really like the fact that it's a multiplayer game even if i dd it in the end and joined leagues and all. I played it for a year and a half. I sank my life in this. Glad i quit. It a was great time..and it also wasted too much of my life.. Its really more an addiction, MMORPGs.

Gothic I is also good, very much like Gothic II only shorter, uglier and with far clunkier controls At the time, it was the best thing ever. Gothic II blew my mind after that.

Gothic III was rushed by the publisher, and it shows. Community patches made the game stable, but it still starts off amazing and gets completely rushed halfway through. Some parts of the world are pretty much blank.

Anyway, immediately after publishing Gothic III, the studio split from that publisher. Jowood was it? The fun thing is, Jowood retained the intellectual property for Gothic and the Gothic people are not allowed to make Gothic games anymore. If I recall, Gothic IV was outsourced to some Indian studio with no game dev experience and is so terrible I feel filthy for just mentioning it.

The studio who made the Gothic games transitioned into making the Risen series. I played both I and II, they're okay, definitely feel like Gothic I-II. A deja vu experience. You can expect the same rich, beautiful, compact worlds that somehow feel huge, some broken game mechanics and bugs that made Gothic special. They really feel like Gothics. If you like Gothics absolutely give these a try.

I enjoyed all TES games from Morrowind until now, but they're not up there with the Gothics in my mind. Beautiful, huge worlds, but with shallow and forgetful characters, terrible plots and shallow combat mechanics. Still enjoyed them as a tourism sort of thing, you know: you run around as an honorable Nord, see nice things, groom your honorable Nord beard and yell panthers off mountain cliffs. Random fun stuff but you know, nothing deep.

As for the Witcher series, the first one is hard to get into. It's fine but obviously flawed. I'd put it below the TES games. However, I gave Witcher II a shot shortly after playing Skyrim and it was so much better than Skyrim. I did not expect it, especially after feeling a bit burned out from RPGs from 100%ing Skyrim achievements. Witcher II is such a good game. Try it, for real.
