Vintage Ampeg 8X10 ?

Are the vintage 8X10's really that much better than a new version? I'm talking about a 70-72 with all of the speakers in good condition, but with the tolex beat up. I have a SVT-CL and right now am using a 410hlf and looking for more options. I know about the nv610's and always have an eye out for one, but am not willing to pay someone $200 more than what they paid for it new. So, is the difference in tone with the 8X10's noticable?

It is to me. Given all the Bergie fans here who would otherwise be ideal SVT 810E candidates, I'd say it's safe to assume there is SOMETHING lacking in the sound of the modern 810E.

Don't forget about the ampeg svt 610 hlf. It's a great sounding cab in its own right, and quite a bit cheaper than the berg.

How about price wise? A beat up looking vintage cab seems to be about the same amount as a newer cab in good condition. Is $500-600 a good deal on a 70-72 8X10 or would you spend the same amount on a new one in like new condition?
Or how about other options in that price range. Like I said, I am using the 410hlf, which I like, but I feel I could get a better tone from my SVT-CL.

You know, I wouldn't count out a new 810E without trying one first. I just bought one to replace an Eden 210T and 1x15 which are very nice quality cabs, but just can't produce the growl and deep tight punch that my new 810e is giving me.

I got the one with the fancy anniversary tolex and grill cloth. The Ampeg web sight states these cabs are made of baltic birch and depite being a big heavy cab, it so far is the sweetest tone I have had yet in a bass rig.

There may be some mojo in buying an old beat up cab but to state that the new ones don't sound good is just simply not true. Mine sounds fantastic. Of course I wasn't able to compare it to a vintage cab but I still think it was a great deal at $922 Canadian.

true, the SVT610HLF is a great sounding cab in its own right, but the combination with the SVT-CL is not the greatest out there IMO... As you say with the 410HLF, it feels like I could get a better tone from my SVT-CL, so I bought the SVT412HE...

I've unfortunately no experience with the 810E vs.Vintage 8x10, so I cannot help you with that decision...
