Vintage Fender bass string retainer size?

Hi guys,
I'm curious about a small detail. Did the size and shape of vintage Fender bass string retainers change over the years?

I've got a Pure Vintage reissue that's different than my actual vintage 1972 Fender retainer.

The Pure Vintage has a top disc diameter of 5/8" and is about a 1/4" high underneath.
The 1972 retainer is 3/4" diameter on top and about 1/8" high underneath.

Is the Pure Vintage retainer a reissue of the early 50s pre-cbs P-bass, or something?
Does anyone know when the change was made to the larger diameter and shorter 1972 style? Thanks.

i didn't know until very recently that they were different

thing is i'm still not sure how, it could very well be that your '72 tree is in fact the more "vintage-correct" of the two and all modern US fenders use the smaller/taller style
