after seeing one of my favorite bands (skeletonwitch) play last night, i've decided that their bass tone was perfect and i want to try and get one like it. their bassist was playing a rickenbacker out of some kind of tube amp. i'm thinking about purchasing a mexican fender p bass and replacing the pickups with a SD quarter pound to start out, trading my ibanez SR305 to help lower the price. is this a good bass for the tone im looking for?

vintage tone for thrash metal?

I have heard plenty of P in thrash. J too. I guess it depends on you. The P, in my opinion, is better suited to thrash. Again, opinion.
What he said ^^^Whenever I hear thrash it seems like the guitar is so much louder than the bass that it's hard to hear.
IMO a Jazz bass is more suited to get that sound.
No. You say you want the tone of a rickenbacker, so your going to need one of those or something very close. A precision bass isnt close to that. If your wanting to know what basses where very popular in the early days of thrash, the answer of course is BC Rich, Jackson, and some other basses tossed in here and there.
@ Nobody As a bass player your ear should be able to pick out the bass in any music. I get it you don't like thrash but really never heard bass in it. That's a joke right. Get real. Speed and thrash has crazy bass runs and complex changes.
A '70s Jazz with a maple FB is the way to go for Ric tone without a Ric. With the tone rolled all the way on. A Geddy would be the way to go, IMO
Snag a washburn force 8 on the cheap, they get a ric-ish sound and you'll be totally cool for using a 'vintage' 80's bass! Trust me, the thrash hipsters will love it.
Vintage type basses often work well in thrash.
I love Rickenbackers, but I think a P-bass, or a Jazz would work quite well also. Between the two Fenders, I'd get a Jazz and somewhat favor one pickup or another.

Precisions won't sound like Rics. Jazzes won't sound like Rics. PJs won't sound like Rics. Musicmans won't sound like Rics.

However, they can all sound good in a thrash metal setting.
But, it's true, all basses have sounds particular to themselves, and for Rickenbacker sounds, the easiest way to get them is with a Rickenbacker.

For the majority of metal bands I can't pick out the bass to save my life - and this is coming from a guy who use to be a huge metalhead.

Someone with serious sound editing skills has been able to isolate the bass tone and boost it seriously.
Btw, I'd say a p/j pickup configuration does wonders for trash metal.
There has been a bunch of Metallica Bass Only songs that have appeared on Youtube. I read somewhere that they were ripped from Guitar Hero.
