Double Bass Violin+Viola Build

Hey Guys,

So Im testing the waters here to see if there is much interest in following my builds of a sister set of a Violin and a Viola.

A little about me,
My name is Evan, and wood working has always been a huge part of my life, as well as playing upright bass. For the a long time I had planned on majoring in Performance for UB, but after finding the luthier world, that has since changed. I graduated high school last year and I'm taking a year off whilst apprenticing a violin maker in my area (since last december). Within the next year, I plan to continue my apprenticeship, and start school at North Bennet Street School(Boston) next year and major in Violin Making. These instruments will be part of my portfolio/application process.

So if you guys could please let me know your interest levels considering these aren't basses but still in the same family, and if there is an interest ill start posting!

There was a fellow at the Oberlin workshops this year who was in the North Bennett Street School who brought a great bass that he built there this spring. The thing was giant and had a great voice to it. Unfortunately I don't remember his name.

That's great to hear! I'm quite excited and hearing story's about people building nice instruments who went to NBSS just makes it better!

Corey Swan. His bass is for sale in the classifieds:

He is a great young talent and I am sure we will be hearing much about him. I would love you to document your build here. It does apply.

Thanks Brian for updating me about this thread. NBSS is a great place and, Roman Barnas, the instructor is one of the best makers I know. I have no doubt that you will enjoy the school and that it will help you immensely in your making. I would just cation you that if you do decide to go to the school, be prepared to forget everything that you have learned at your apprenticeship and start from scratch doing everything the way that Roman shows you. If you have any questions about the school let me know and please post some of your work or what you have of the new project. I would really like to see what you are doing.

That wonderful. I've heard a little about the new building, and it seems to be quite the upgrade!

Wonderful. My teacher is actually Boyd Paulson and I'm quite curious to see the difference in techniques as Roman studied under Boyd for a while.

I'm sure ill be PMing you in the near future with questions about the school!

Ill start posting my build shortly. If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks guys!
