Paul Kowert is giving virtual lessons as part of a new project called "Virtual Lessons for Actual Change."

"Professional musicians volunteer to teach their skills in a collective effort to raise funds for the advancement of racial justice ... 100% of the profits [go] to organizations working to end systemic racism, such as the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Color of Change."

I signed up for a 30-minute session with Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive, another heavy hitter who is part of the project.

just registered for one in March! Thank you for creating this thread I would've had no idea.

Had a nice/fun/informative session with Paul Kowert today. All double bassists should sign-up immediately.

That’s great to hear, John. What did you and Paul cover? I have a lesson with him Friday. I’ve been listening to his work intently this week, taking notes, jotting a few questions, etc. I’m probably really overthinking/over preparing for it.

Talked about music that I play. I played a little arco (Beatles- I am the Walrus) for him to critique; talked about switching from standard tuning to solo and back; note choices and placement; practice; luthiers in Nashville (I’m close in Memphis); various Punch Brothers and Hawktail tunes; recordings he’s doing on the side; yada yada. It’s what you want to make of it - he’s an easy guy to talk to.

I’d love to hear what a lesson with Bridget Kearny is like. She’s one of my favorite players.

Unfortunately I had to cancel my lesson with Ms. Kearney due to a work conflict. It was set for March 3 at 4:30pm MT, so there might be an open slot now.

I'm going to grab a lesson with Paul Kowert instead. Sounds like it'll be an enjoyable experience!
