I just picked up the SGT so I can replicate the sound of my 90's era SVT IV Pro (nothing comes close, not even newer SVT 4 Pros), and I absolutely love it! On my SVT I keep the gain up 100%, the compression at 12 oclock (~5:1), and the limit defeat on (that little yellow light lets me know I'm getting the job done).
I do the same with the SGT, but I plug the preamp out into the FX loop return on a mesa wd800, and voila I've got a lightweight rig that pushes serious air and sounds 100% consistent wherever I go. But I have some questions for some experts with this device:
1. Would keeping it at 100% damage the power amp of my mesa?
2. Is it a problem for signal from the direct XLR out if I have the level at 100%? The manual says this output carries the full compressor, preamp, and SGT signals + cab IR, and also that the volume and compressor knobs are only in effect when the preamp is on, so I assume the volume impacts the direct output signal, I just don't have a sense of whether keeping it pinned 100% would clip the direct signal while sounding find in the preamp out.
And for anyone else with this setup, what do you use to mute your signal if you use the tuner out (the mute button on my amp is no longer in the signal chain)? Even for a tuner first in the pedal chain, the tuner doesn't mute any signal if there isn't a cable plugged in, and I've encountered a bunch of ugly buzzing and popping when I powered the amp up before plugging in my bass, or when changing cables.
