Walked in for strings.... New Bass Day!

I've had my 305 (I think? Active 5 string, natural/amber finish) since 97, great bass. Maybe I'll replace the electronics at some point, the pickup seems good still.
This is how it should be. Analysis Paralysis is a real thing. I suffer from it.

Sweet!I went to my local Luthier to pick up a bass that had been worked on, and I noticed a new guitar store had opened up right next door. Might as well check it out right? I figured I'll pick up some new strings and look around.
I walked in and saw mostly guitars, but then almost around the corner I spotted this Ibanez ATK on the wall that looked very interesting to me. I've been wanting a stingray style bass for awhile and I had seen these around before in pictures but never in person.
I heard they were pretty heavy so I figured I would go and see how heavy they actually were, but to my surprise it was very light, maybe around 7-8 lbs. Hmm... well I'm sure it's not balanced if it's this light. Wrong again, it balanced perfectly.
Well Ibanez have a reputation for having fast thin "shreddy" necks and I don't love those, but man this neck nothing like that. It feels like a chunky P bass neck which feels great to me.
So then I plug it in, and it sounds great... I'm thinking to myself "man am I really going to buy this thing?"
I took a pause and gave it a real good examination up and down to see if anything was weird with the neck, etc. After it passed that test I thought to myself that I should probably put it back and wait a week, if I still want it I'll buy it.
But I couldn't do it, bought it on the spot.
Turns out it's a '95 MIJ Ibanez ATK100 which is the passive version of the ATK line.
I guess they only made these for 2 years, and the body is made out if different wood than the other ATK series which is why it's so light.
The more I learn about it the more I like it, there's even the faded outline of a skull and crossbones sticker that apparently used to be on it which I think is pretty cool.
In the past when I buy basses it's always after doing a ton of research, reading up on all the models, pros and cons, etc. This one I just saw it, liked it, played it, bought it.
I had a chance to play it for a few hours last night and I just love it. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but it's perfect for me.
Walked in for strings, walked out with a new bass and forgot the strings

If you’re gonna walk out with something unplanned that’s the bass to do it with.

Oh how I miss these days . Online bass shopping can be so hit or miss.
But this can also be very dangerous and addictive if you live near some great shops like me . ( Bass Central).

I'm a lifetime Fender guy but I'm pretty intrigued by the ATK, so I'm with you!
That is awesome. Sometimes the bass does find you, as a few others have said.
Waaaaay back in '92, I went into a guitar store to check out their selection of basses; I was ready to move up from my cheap Memphis PJ. But among the many Fenders on the wall was a dark blue 1990 Peavey Dyna-Bass that was mint. I asked "What's that?", he told me a guy who played Gospel had it for a bit, traded it in on a Fender. I played it, and loved it. It was soooooo much better than that Memphis. I was still a high school student, and the guy who owned the shop was a friend of my dad. I told him I wanted it, but was about $100 short, and could I do layaway or something. He asked if I had a job, I said yes, then he told me to give me what I had, take the bass home, and send him a check for the $100 when I got paid, if I didn't he'd just call my dad and have him remind me
. I sent him a check the next week. I still own that bass.

Bought mine from fellow TB'r and all-around good dude XRYDER. It's got an aftermarket Warmouth neck with a Tele headstock and an upgraded pickup and it's been my main bass ever since.
Big time. I spend way too much time gathering everyone else's opinion, when mine is what matters most I suppose.
Great score. A lightweight MIJ ATK at a "buy me now" price is striking gold.
And, yeah, although Ibanez Soundgears have a reputation for "pencil necks" their BTB and Talman lines have wider, thicker, chunkier necks. (I'm not a fan of Soundgear 4-string necks but love their 5-string necks).

Me too! I over-research and perseverate over a potential purchase. Even when I get to the point where I'm like "yes, that's it, I'm getting it", I'll find a way to unconvince myself.
