Hey wait, you do realize women will dismiss you in lieu of the lead guitarist, singer/frontman, drummer, keyboardist, trumpet/saxophone player and sound guy before you are even remotely visible. Not the sound guy? Yes, even the sound guy. But, but he's not even on the stage!?!? That's life.

Actually, if you practice in a quiet room you don't absolutely have to have an amp at all! So, I would suggest that you buy the best bass your $300 will allow and get a $50 headphone amp for now. A really cheap bass will need (or at least want) to be upgraded very quickly. A decent $300 bass will last you a long time, forever even. A headphone amp will let you practice all you want and they allow you to plug in another music source when you want to play along with your favorite music. In a few month's time you will probably accumulate enough money to get a decent enough new practice amp or a quite good used low power amp. You certainly can get a bass/amp starter kit for $300 or less but while I hear of many people here who play $300 basses as their main bass for years on end I don't hear of anyone who does that with a starter kit. I think that if you get a starter kit you certainly will get started but you will have both a bass and an amp that you won't want for very long.

I got me a Yamaha RBX with Silvertone practice amp, strap, 21' cord, & a little Korg tuner all together off of Craigslist last year for 160 bucks. Even came with the Alfred's Basic Bass Method starter book w/cd. Everything was obviously used gently only a few times before I got it. CL is full of ads like these, so definitely check there. I've been really really happy with it. In fact, I wish I still had that guys phone number, cuz there's been many a day I wanted to call him up just to thank him again! All the better if you have any guitarist friends to go with you to check them out too
