How much does one have to know to put together a pre routed body and neck, and install the hardware? Is it way too much to tackle if you have no other experience in it?

If you're comfortable with a drill and a soldering iron, you can do it. You might run into some issues that need professional help (for me it was sizing, shaping, and cutting the nut). Depening on the parts you get, it might be less work than mine was.
