Warmoth Owners Club!!

Does anyone have a photo of a Warmoth body with a contoured heel, with the neck plate on and everything completely assembled? Or an experience with one of these at all?
Also, has anyone tried installing recessed neck screw washers (like on the Gecko and a lot of custom basses, for instance) on a regular Warmoth P or J body, especially with a contoured heel? I'm contemplating doing this...

..

I have, one of the bodies I bought used had the contoured heel. I rarely play up there but it felt nice, slightly easier to fret the A and E strings in the upper fret, but not a huge difference. Unless you constantly hit those high notes, it is not worth it IMO. I don't have any photos since I sold it.

First off, I hate the overhanging fret, and if I do it again, I'll opt out of the extra fret. That said, mine features the following:

Precision body, swamp ash, clear matte finish
Jazz neck, maple w/rosewood board; Warmoth 2+2 headstock w/black Gotoh tuners
Seymour Duncan Music Man pickup w/SD preamp
black Schaller bridge

While it's not in rotation at the moment, I love the feel, balance, sound and look. It's not going anywhere.

Folks, I have decided to enter into the Warmoth Family. I had been going back and forth about doing this, the reason being that I am not sure that I could put it together properly.

Well I finally said what the hell and decided that I'll get the body and neck and do the oiling and that stuff, but I have a master luthier who is going to do the final setup for me. That and as many folks here who have had good things to say about doing it. So here is what I choose, it's paid for, so be gentle in your assesments.

Gecko 6 String
Swamp Ash Body
Figured Walnut Top
Black accent line
Will use Bartolini P4 type pickups
Will use Hipshot A 17mm bridge
Wenge Neck
Ebony fingerboard
Peghead with Figured Walnut on Top

I'm nervous as hell, but again I think I have researched my butt off enough, both here and looking at other successful basses and taking their ideas. I will do some customization on it to make it "mine", and I look forward to sharing the coming pics and eventual sound clips with you.

Paulie

I've had the electronics installed by an expert and I'm glad I did.... (he solders better then I can) and that final setup makes a big difference between an OK Bass and an awesome Bass..... Welcome to the clan...

Yeah well I've learned what I am good at, and who I should pay! I liken it to this...if you lay out 10 parts for a computer, then give a list of 123 to a total stranger, they could probably put it together OK. But give those 10 pieces to me (a computer geek by trade) and I'll put it together and it will scream.

Dudes, I'm stoked as hell! Updates will be on the way.

hey all..

pretty sure i am going to join the warmoth family at some point in the relatively near future...

one question for the group...for those that did not self-assemble (and there's no way im risking it), how much have you paid for a pro to do it for you?

i have someone near by who is way more than capable, but i havent been down to get a quote yet...figure i'll have him do it no matter what (hes a minor legend, jim mouradian), but might be nice to know what the range is...

also, is everyone totally happy with the fretwork on the necks? do they need crowning/leveling right from the get-go?

Sounds like a sweet bass! I'd love to see pictures when they're available.

I paid $150.00 for the Honeyburst Bass to be fully assembled and (after I put all the wood and metal together) $50.00 for the electronics on the Vintage White "Ray". Both my necks are/were great right out of the box. YMMV

So, I got the inspiration for this bass from listening to someone talk about the cool look of the "Getty Lee" Signature series bass, but loves the sound of Music man pikups, needed a 5 string and wanted something "different". So I looked at Warmoth's "in-stock" necks and bodies, and came up with a very cool "G-5" that just pounds the walls like theres no tomorrow.

Here is a list of parts I used;

Warmoth deluxe 5 neck
Warmoth G-5 body
Hipshot Ultra light tuners
Dunlop Straplocks
Takeuchi "through body" bride
Nordstrand MM5.2 pickup
Passive tone circuit wired with only a 250Kohm volume pot and parrelel/series switch. (I may end up installing a "tone" pot and tone cap. the jury is still out on this)

This bass went together and set up ultra EZ. I didn't need to do hardly any fret work at all. The neck is ultra straight and the frets were all levelled and all the sharp edges were nocked down nicely. I did a little bit of fret dressing but that is due to the fact that it is extremely dry here in AZ and I am anal about my fret ends. I also did a bit of polishing and "fine" tuning on the nut, but other than that the bridge, pickup, neck angle, etc. all went together very well. I had this bass built, setup and playing in about 2 hours. UPS dropped it off in the afternoon and I was playing it at a gig that same night. Now, I don't recommend doing this as I had to take it appart the next day and "finish" the neck. I played it with the neck "raw" at the gig and it played beautifully. I completely sanded it down, cleaned off the oils and began applying the finish. I had it done and back together in about 4 days.

Here is a photo for your enjoyment.

Warmoth does routes in custom locations for either $40 or $45. (I always forget.) Depending on how you want the pickups spaced, you could probably order a PJ, and then have them route for the neck J, if you can give them the exact location to route it.

Awsome. I dont mind the extra charge. Just as long as they would do it. As for position, well, i suppose half way between the truss rod pocket and the P pup. On a jazz body.
The gentleman's bass on the previous pages with the natural koa body and birdseye neck with ebony board inspired me to want to do this. Always wanted a J/P/J.

Dude, way cool. How did you apply the name on the headstock?

I use Minwax gloss Polyurethane and used Drake Custom's method of applying it. Described here. He writes;
"I apply the wiping varnish with just shop towels in the shop where there is some dust in the air. I always cut the varnish with naphtha which allows better wiping and faster dry time. First coat is cut half and half to let the finish get into the wood. After the first coat is dry I scuff sand with a fine grit fiber cloth wrapped around a rubber block. Then each coat is added and then sanded with the cloth until the desired finish is accomplished. Use thin coats thinned with naphtha as to prevent runs and drips. The finish will level nicely. Any dust nibs that stick to the drying finish are removed during the scuff sanding between coats. The last coat is the one where you want as dust free as possible. You can use the fiber cloth (3600 grit) to buff the finish into a nice luster. You will find that this finish dries very fast and sometimes gets tacky before you can completely get around the instrument so you have to work fast. You also should have some kind of bracket that allows you all around access so you do not leave any lines. Don't do the front, wait until it dries, flip it over and do the back. That will leave lines. Cover the entire instrument with each coat."

You can buy the logo decal (custom made for you) on e-bay.:ninja: If you want the contact person's info you can PM me and I'll get it to you.

Here is a better look at it:

OK, last bridge question, and here is the backround....I am having a 6 string built right now and here are the stats..

Swamp Ash body
Walnut top
Wenge Neck
Ebony fingerboard.

I shoot for a focused sound, and I am planning on putting a P4 style set of Barts and a badass preamp in there for that sound. Would there be an advantage with brass over aluminum, other than weight that is... I know aluminum is supposed to accentuate hi's and mids and the brass the lows...but is it also true that brass has better sustain?

Just got my bass from warmoth and assembled it last night here's the specs

Alder body
Birdseye maple neck
Macassar ebony fingerboard
Hipshot tuners and bridge
Bartolini pickups
Audere audio preamplifier

It plays and sounds awesome just gotta get used to it cause it's my first fretless but it's an awesome bass
