Warwick Corvette/Fralin Alternatives?

I've got a Standard Warwick Corvette that has the Lindy Fralin J Pickups with 250K Pots and a capacitor that says 103 on it? I use this for recording in my studio and I'm not quite happy with the sound. I feel like the sound is a little muffled or muddy compared to warm and I just can't seem to get happy with it. I also have an older fretless Ibanez roadster that has the Super 4 pickup in it with active electronics and I like the sound of it better but it is really noisey. It is more versatile with the active setup. I know the Fralins are really good and I do not have a great deal of experience with all the options out there. Does anyone have suggestions? Should I try something like the Model J's, add a preamp, change to 500K pots; change strings? Any help is greatly appreciated. Maybe I need a different bass? I play mostly vintage to rock, not really metal. thanks

Edit: I did have EMGs in there a long time ago and they sounded a little sterile to me if that helps. I have an Eden 400 amp that has a nice direct output. I use the EQ on the eden and just can't seem to find what I'm looking for...

So I've been doing alot of research and I found some sound files of a Fender 72' Jazz Bass with different pickups like my Fralin's and the Dimarzio and when I play the same thing on my Warwick, it just sounds much more midrange and muffled compared to being very tight and punchy on the Fender. Are Fender's just that much more punchy than a Warwick Corvette? Any advice is really appreciated. I've checked everything else except for the height of my pickups. Would the height make things sound that much different? thanks
