It's one of the best mix of woods you can find (Bubinga, Maple, Wenge) so it have to sound good. For that there's 3 main factors, 1 the strings 2 the pickups and 3 the preamp. For me 1 Labella gold flatwounds 2 Delano quad coils 3 John East preamp. For the switches, I ended up playing mostly with the bridge in parallel (up) and the neck in sigle (midle). And now I love it soooo much and lost the gas for a thumb nt.
Hi,
I have a 5 string version of this bass and I just can not find a sound I like out the of the thing.
Anyone else have one of these and feel the same way?
It has 2 switches, 3 positions each with active and passive sounds, but it sounds meh.
I've tried and had some neck-thru and bolt-on $$s with maple necks. I agree...meh. Now, make the neck ovangkol or wenge? Different story. This is one of those few basses, to me, where the neck wood absolutely makes a difference, even regardless of neck attachment/construction. The ovangkol and wenge $$ necks certainly have the angry mid-heavy tone that Warwicks are known for, but more towards hi-mids. Thumb basses are the low-mid kings, on the other hand.
This isn't a tonewood debate commencement, just personal experience.
Yep ! It's a different beast now.So you swapped the pickups and the preamp? This bass cost almost $4000 when I bought it new in 2014. I am kind of hesitant to spend more money.
I made a booklet with the upgrades, setup measurements, preamp configuration etc, if interested, just ask.So you swapped the pickups and the preamp? This bass cost almost $4000 when I bought it new in 2014. I am kind of hesitant to spend more money.
I have a double buck 5er too. So I went through tons of strings for it. It took setting up the pickups exactly how I wanted and I eventually settled on Dean Markley Blue Steel which brought out the best in these pickups. Best growl and bite and it just sounds huge like that. Before going nuts gutting your bass try some strings and setup and you'll be amazed. These pickups are very sensitive to whatever you do with the bass. Millimeters are precious with this thing. String height and pickups height as well as finding strings that bring out the tone you want. Between blue steels and dr fat beams those sounded the best to me. Both gave me a fat heavy tone with great bite. Something else is that I've had neck through basses and to me bolt on just is more punchy and I just like that better. Punch and growl instead of mostly growly sustain. For you I'd definitely think about a string and preamp pedal that emphasizes the bite more and it'll sound better. Dial in the low mids and high mids and it'll sound awesome. It's too pretty of a bass not to sound great.Hi,
