Warwick question

Hi all! I posted this question in the Warwick club thread and tried searching, both with no luck. There is a TL/DR at the bottom for those not interested in the back story ; )

I am (not so)patiently waiting for an '08 German $$ to get off hold and shipped to me. Long story short, I found this bass on CL, contacted the seller and arranged to see it, but when he took it in to GC to get strings put on it he sold it to them instead! He was asking $700 but sold it to them for $450! I called them the next day and ended up paying $750 with tax. He loses, I lose, GC must be very happy!

The only good thing is that I get that 30 day right to return it. The seller said it had been sitting unused for a few years, though well cared for and in its case. He had some concerns about the neck bowing, but in the pictures he sent me the bass was unstrung and neck was bowed back- wouldn't this be normal for an unstrung bass? He said this is why he sold it to GC- said he was afraid I wouldn't buy it. I wanted to ask him if thought GC wouldn't buy it if I looked at it first?

I'm guessing there wasn't a problem with the neck or GC wouldn't have bought it, but I may be giving them too much credit. I'd love to hear opinions on this and how to make sure it doesn't have a problem- if it comes and has a good set-up, does that prove the neck is ok? What else should I be checking or looking for when the bass arrives? Does this model or this date of manufacture have any particular issues?

It may not sound like it, but I am immensely excited about this. I've only ever seen/played the Rock Bass version of this and liked it enough that I decided to bite the bullet on the price (this will be my most expensive bass) and get it. The only problem was that when I went back to the store it was sold. Decided to check for a used one before ordering one and found this. Everything I've read says how much better the German ones are, so I can't wait to get my hands on this!

Sorry for the book, and thanks for any help!

TL/DR- Any issues to look out for on a 2008 German Corvette $$?

Yes, the neck would have a back bow or be straight without strings on it. Did he take it to GC to get strings put on or changed? My concern would be if he stored it without strings and without loosening the truss rod, that's a no-no. Fortunately you can send it back to Guitar Center if need be.

I'm not aware of any issues with the year or model. I'm guessing it will have an ovangkol neck, which is a pretty solid wood. It probably has a plastic just-a-nut. These sometimes break so check that it is OK, replacement ones are pricey. Are you getting a 4 string or 5 string? I have the 5 string and it's great!

Hi,

I happen to have an '07 or '06 (not really sure...) 4 String $$ Corvette. I agree with the above statement: these are really solidly made instruments. And while you obviously shouldn't leave a neck without strings and a tightened truss rod for extended periods of time, I really wouldn't worry too much about it in this instance. These necks seem really solid. I never had to adjust it in any way and that included changing string gauges, heavy temperature and moisture changes, you name it. Besides, if anything really does go wrong, you can still send it back, right?
It's also true that the Just-a-Nut II on these models is sort of fragile. The two tiny plastic guides on the sides of the upper part of the nut assembly can break really easily. That doesn't really matter as it is still held in place by the two hex screws but you sort of have to pay a bit of attention not to lose it when changing strings. Source: mine's been broken for years...
One tip to avoid this issue: always take off the outer strings first and put them on last. If you start taking off the strings starting with the G string and only have the E string left on, the force on that one side of the nut can be so strong that the small guides brake. I think that is what happened to mine, though I am not sure. And if it does brake, see it as an opportunity to get the brass version ;)
Congratulations on a great bass!
