They are. And they rock butts. However, in a live mix, it's not the easiest to dial in and in some cases it can't be. I've always had trouble dialing out the "boom". I wish it had a treble or extra mid control. It has a very wide ranged yet limiting EQ/controls. It's really weird at times. You'd think that a ton of people would use it. But I think because of the reasons I just stated, it is most times moved on from.

How's your dirt search going @vivaknoxvegas?! Find any keepers yet??



I will say this though. Its def one of a kind IMO. I really love how it sounds by itself. I still have to spend more time dialing it in live, but it's really cool to have one again. I hope to hold on to this one for good. Plus, again, I really dig the color. I like all of Way Huge's colors. I really like that brushed aluminum look too. I want a Red Llama just because of that awesome looking red!

It's just like you say, it't not for everyone. Nothing wrong with that. I actually dont use DG fro dirt either. But God I love their tone. That is why the B7K Ultra is one of my all time fav pedals. But I've had a VMT and a Duality and I flipped both after some time. Not to say they aren't awesome, just not what I'm looking for for my bands sound. So I can relate. It's a great time to be a bassist who uses dirt ;)

The Blackbeard makes a great thick fuzz sound, and has a mids control. Even with the mids cranked the tone is still pretty warm, because the Blackbeard gives you very full bottom end. It feels like the fuzz sits on top of the bass. My only complaint is the two jacks are so close to the power jack I can't use my pancake patch cables.

Here's a short sample. Note the switch settings is not as pictured - the pic is old. This sample is using LED diodes. The knob settings are close though.

I got mine for around $70 (IIRC) a while back, and it took me MONTHS of tweaking it to get settings juuuust right. Who knew a fuzz could add SO MUCH low end if you're not careful? This thing is like fine-tuning resonant filter peaks on an analog synth; two degrees of travel on any pot on it is audible.

Now, I've not had occasion to use it recently, but have all the settings marked on it. It's ready when I am. And what I really like about it is that while I find most Muff-styled fuzzes to have a pretty grindy quality, this one can dial in a smoother character, still undeniably fuzzy, but a finer grain of fuzz than I've heard elsewhere. Maybe it's just that my settings roll off the highs and warm the sound up? Whatever it is, I like it.

It's a whoooole lot of pedal for what you pay, even brand new, and mine was a STEAL. Thanks FleaBay!

Let me get back to you on that, but I'd be happy to! Looks like it's currently under a pile somewhere or in a bag, and I'm not seeing it right this sec. Heh.

I'll dig it up, & also test it on my newest bass to see if it still brings all the joy, & post settings/results for you.

Are there any other fuzz pedals that put out low end on the same level as the Pickle? I'm not getting rid of mine any time soon, but I'm interested in exploring some different characters of fuzz and I don't want to lose the massive low end in the process.

This thing puts out some serious bass, even with the filter knob pretty far up.

I've still got my Pickle. I actually bought one because of a friend who used one for guitar. He plays really downtuned stoner/doom stuff, so I guess it worked for him. I ran my guitar through it (in E standard) and found it to be totally unusable. It did however occur to me that it would be killer for bass, so I bought one for that reason (I actually didn't play a bass through it first, I just knew it was great for bass from playing guitar through it) and only much later became aware of their widespread popularity among bass players.

How about a megalith or may a DOD Carcosa. Both those have great low end. There are quite a few fuzzes out there nowadays with good low end response. The tall font Russian by wren and cuff is supposed to be one of the closest green Russian clones out there. It was too dark for me though. And while it has massive low end, it does away pretty quickly where I like to have the tone knob. The Black Russian my Vick audio and exh are both great on the low end too IME.

From what I've read, the control missing is Voice which controls the "intensity" of the Scoop control. Did the Dirty Donny not scoop enough in your experience?

I ask because I just picked one up yesterday. Kinda stoked it has a control to scoop less, and also stoked to possibly have found a fuzz I'll like!
