We always said, "4 times zero is still zero" when Yankees with 4WD cars and trucks would spin out on the wet Texas ice. Yep, it's not 3" of snow like you think, that's causing the trouble; it's the 2" of wet ice under the 1" of snow that's causing the problem.

Gotta get one of those big Ariens self-propelled blowers to get through that. I had a neighbor that a couple times a year when it was deep and heavy and wet would come across the street and spend an extra 5 minutes to remove my snowplow berm along with his own. What a nice guy!
Yeah, that's about what we were going to have until it shifted upward. It looks like you folks are going to get hit hard. We are in Georgia and now the rough stuff starts around Atlanta and northward. We already had a game plan and then it changed.
I've been outside most of the day working on various projects. It is 66 degrees and sunny!

I’m mostly a 3 season gig person. Winter for me means practice, work on gear, and practice some more.
A proper northern car automatically spreads flakes of rust on the road for traction.
Nebraska here. Why would a gig get cancelled because of weather? Laugh out loud. 10 below is nothing. I don't ever remember a gig getting cancelled because of weather and we have tornados, snow, wind, subzero, heat, humidity whatever.
If the roads are closed that's one thing. But in the winter you're indoors. Yeah it can be cold loading in and out, but it isn't that bad. Shovel the snow off your car and head home.
Maybe we have an advantage because by and large there isn't tons of traffic. But never in my career has a gig been cancelled because of weather. (We've quit early in the summer a couple of times because we were outdoors and a storm was coming).

Not to get political, but the Ted jokes are getting friggin' hysterical. He's our state's winter weather alert version of Punxsutawney Phil. It's even got a title - The Fleeing Ted Cruz Indicator.

Hope the storm has not been too bad in Texas. Last night my DC gig for Saturday night was postponed to a later date, which is pretty much a first for me, but I believe was the right call. DC is not snow equipped in my experience and the club was receiving calls to ask if the show was still on. Sigh.
I woke this morning to read a reliable local weatherman write for our region to be prepared for 1-2 feet of snow. Well at least I'll get some exercise this weekend even if won't get to play.

Here in central North Carolina the weather forecast has dialed back the snow from over a foot to less than three inches. Instead we'll get between a half-inch and inch of ice.
A quarter-inch is sufficient to take down power lines. A whole inch will set local weather records. After the storm moves out there will be a cold snap that ensures the ice doesn't go away quickly.

-22 temps here with a brisk 25-35 mph winds. We had no gigs this weekend so no worries for us. I see about 75% of the area gigs seem to have been cancelled by venues for tonight. Unusual to see that.
I met a grade school teacher in Anchorage Alaska who told me “We don’t even cancel *recess* until it gets below -20F.”
Of course. Alaska operates on a different level. The second time I was in Alaska for a family shotgun wedding in late January ( honestly I invited myself because I had a great time previously but in the summer and fall ), This was in the mid to late 80's. The tires were not round when you started to drive and by the time you got to where you were going it may have softened up. They do know how to party and the alcohol tolerance was higher than normal. I need to go back again. I did go a 3rd time but only in Ketchikan which off mid BC Sometimes I wished I moved there instead.

I'm not even asking about tomorrow night's gig - highly doubtful unless someone's got a teleporter than can loan us.
Sunday's is looking highly doubtful too.
I could the use the money, but agree with not taking risks when ice is likely to be the predominant weather factor.
Plus our home is halfway up a hill and residential streets typically don't get sanded until last.
We're not talking lightweight snow here.

)Sorry the gig was canceled, @Pocket Dave . Just consider that the lost gig income is probably less than the actuarial cost of repairs to your vehicle due to icy roads.
And as timing would have it, I'm playing a gig tonight in the Chicago suburbs. We will have a low of -9 degrees (Fahrenheit) tonight. The performance is associated with a Memorial service, so no rescheduling or canceling! Weeeeeee!
It's not here yet NM and we will likely get it first. Supposedly should be here by now. I have the shovel, generator , chain saw and broom brush room ready. on the porch I already went grocery shopping. It's really only a day or so of ABQ getting shut down. They will probably close 40 on Carnuel Canyon because that stretch of road gets double the snowfall, Was gonna go up the cabin in the mountains. I shut off the water Monday. I have a pretty capable truck with a winch but that's not a guarantee about not getting stuck,

Rare as they are here, they're still around. Our old neighborhood in Dallas had small but steep 90' high ridges - we were halfway up one. There are ravine-filled, west and northwest facing bluffs throughout Ft Worth - "where the west begins". Our current home is on the way up one.
Plus injuries, downtime or worse.

If it's pure ice like a lot of these storms get, it doesn't take much of an incline to be a problem. Especially if you're going the decline direction.
