Well need help deciding on what amp??

So I currently have a few dollars coming in from selling some gear, and a friend has a Ampeg SVT 2 Pro that he is trying to sell along with a 810vr cabinet. Now the amp and cab look brand new and was in a jam space with very little hours. I have wondered over the last few years, have I been missing something by never owning a tube amp or a Ampeg SVT. I really like, and have been currently playing a Mesa M6 with a Bergantino NV610 for the big rig and a Mesa D800 with a Berg cn212. Both Riga have handled anything I need and sound fantastic, but can you go your whole life without owning a Ampeg rig? That is the question. Before I played Mesa/Berg I had a GK for a hot min and wasn’t my thing, and before that I played a Peavey Megabass with 1 or 2 1516 cabinets that I purchased new in the 80’s and I still own. So 20 years plus of solid state power has done me well and have had many compliments, but something says........

Also I rarely get a gig that I would need to bring such a big amp too, so it will live mostly in the practice space, but when the day calls it will be there and hopefully that day will include my 80’s Mockingbird. I’ll even include a photo just for fun! Thanks for your opinions and rock on!

I am sorry no one responded here. The 2 PRO is a cool head, however, the gear you already have is REALLY GOOD. If you go all-tube, here is something you need to keep in mind:
  • Will you mic your 2 PRO/810 rig at shows? Will the sound man work with that?
  • Do you really need that much volume?
  • Is power tube overdrive really worth it to you?
  • Do you want to lug around a 165lb cabinet with an 80lb head at 3am on a Friday or Saturday?
I owned a 2 PRO and yes, it sounds VERY COOL. However, my 54lb Fearless cabinet with 5lb Mesa D800 is wonderful. Easiest gear to move around. I use pedals to shape my sound, go direct for all shows, and smile the rest of the way. Easy load out, same tone at all shows, no issues with stairs or requiring bandmates to help me. It's your call though - try it out at a gig! Borrow it, pay a rental fee. See if that tone is worth it TO YOU.

It’s interesting both great the Ampeg 810 is definitely more vintage and less defined then the Berg cab when engaging the horn. But all flavors of great. It’s been fun trying out and buying different amps over the years, so much to choose from these days. Literally gigged 1 amp for 20 years, so having choices is amazing.

Get the SVT 2 pro, “ride for the brand” , and be done with things. If there ever was something that defined “The Power of Bass”, this set up IS it! BTW if you get this and do not like it, just leave your back door unlocked, and I will take of the problem, and leave you a check. If you do end up with the 2 pro, and doesn’t work out send me a PM.

I guess if you like that type of cab, it would be :D But I kid Greenboy. He was among the very first to exploit the then-new high excursion neos Eminence makes in a hi-fi bass cab, and I give him total respect for it. As for me, well, you know...

Engaging the horn? People still do that? :D

But hey, I kid cabs with tweeters. They're fine for some, just not my thing. Enjoy your new rig, man. And ignore the naysayers. There is a major reason that the SVT is the only bass amp in the world that has been continually available since 1969.
