What 5 string would you buy for £4000

+1 on the Sadowsky NYC. Many great sounding pup options which might cater to your taste e.g. a Jazz with slim soapbars in 60's location, Single Coils, Humcancelling or possibly a Modern with the soapbars closer to the bridge (sounds less like a Jazz though imo).

There are a fair amount of sound samples that you could check on the Sadowsky forums - many recorded by TB'ers.

Only exceptional players should be allowed to own insanely expensive boutique basses. There's nothing more pathetic than a middle aged, amateur level player, knocking out 'Sweet Home Alabama', in some crappy bar, on a $6,000 bass. A $6,000 bass doesn't make you sound $6,000 better. Are you able to justify owning a $6,000 bass or are you one of the above?

If you're in the UK, Mark at Bass Direct in Warwick is the person to ask. His shop stocks a huge amount of basses and he really knows his stuff and is a lovely guy. Here's the number: 0 (044) 1926 886433, so I would give him a call and see what he says, even if you can't get over to his shop. He really helped me out when I was fussing over a similar problem (but with a lot less cash!) :)

If this is the only money that you will have and you need some cash for living costs, be sensible and buy a reliable model that you feel comfortable with and at ease with, thus saving the remainder for a rainy day!!! The advice in your case should boil down to the money - not the item. The choice of item is yours - there should be some good basses for between £1000 and $1000. If you really have that amount to spend on an instrument, get one custom made by a top luthier/bass specialist. Plenty about on both sides of the pond.

I'd have something made.
I would NOT spend 4000 Pound on one however.
I just think that there is no need to pay such a lot of money and still get a bass that truly is second to none.

I think you#d have money left even if you had an of these build you your perfect instrument.

These people keep them in business. Without talentless middle-aged hacks there would be no Alembic, no Sadowsky, no Harley Davidson and no Ferrari

Really? So quantify how good you have to be to have a $6000 bass. How about $100? Or $10,000?

Or maybe people should buy whatever they want within their means and make the best music they can on it.

People who are good enough to own a $6,000 bass rarely have to buy one. They are given one, gratis, by the manufacturer. Even the great Pino Pallidino does not own such a monstrosity.

So by your logic only formula one drivers should be able to own a Ferrari or a Porche?
Only Usain Bolt should be able to wear gold Puma's?

Bullsh*t!! If you want something awesome and can afford it without failing in providing for yourself & your family, get it!!

Life's too short to listen to negative people like this. Do what you love, play what you want. I would say I love my Ken Smith, but I don't think it would be the sound you are looking for.
