I just LOVE his sound on early Weather Report albums... I love his sound more than Jaco's :p
So what bass does he use? maybe any special effects too / irregular amps or something?

    URB?
    ...some old Czech model?
Early Weather Report was acoustic; maybe by Sweetnighter, Zawinul brought in Andrew White(a funk/R&B bassist).

What album are you talking about?

I have been on a Vitous kick lately...right now it's Star with Garbarek & Erskine + Journey's End with Surman, John Taylor, & Jon Christensen.

I'm talking about his album in the album Weather Report (1971)...
for example in the songs "Umbrellas" or "Eurydice"... it is a unique sound, don't sure what type of bass... anyweay I don't recognize sounds well yet...

When I saw him during Weather Report's early days he played a P bass and an upright which he said had been in his family for at least two generations. It may have even been over 200 years old.

When he picked up the P bass and began to flog it, I thought he actually might break it. It looked like a toy in his hands.

Here he is playing a J bass

...that almost looks like Buster Williams' Fender Jazz(played in the early electric Herbie daze).
