Also my suggestion would be to have a friend or acquaintance who has been playing for a while, come with you to check out these basses. Someone that you trust their judgement.

P bassI'm over 60 and want to start learning the bass. Guitar center has two I'm interested in. A fender short scale mustang and a MIM precision bass. They both some good when the sales person played them and feel good in my hands. What would you choose for a new player?
Would never buy my first guitar, bass or other, new, at GC. Wherever you live or a close drive, my recommendation is looking at used, but playable, at local pawn shops. That's where I started. And $aved.
Sounds like decent advice, but when you're new, you have no idea what you enjoy. It takes years to figure that out. So you might as well go with the proven thing. What bass for a new player?
Anything you enjoy. practicing is more fun and progress comes quicker if you enjoy the instrument you play.
View attachment 3543734 Guitar Center began selling Marcus Miller Basses, & the quality with the active passive/preamp is one of the best for the $$. The problem is they do not have any on the showroom floor, & only online.
Fair enough.Sounds like decent advice, but when you're new, you have no idea what you enjoy. It takes years to figure that out. So you might as well go with the proven thing.
Jeeze man, you guys act like 60 is one foot in the grave. Go work out or something. If I was starting at age sixty, I would buy the lightest-weight bass guitar I could afford.
That said, a one pickup, two-knobs, no-battery P-bass is a very practical choice![]()
Good for you, if you can wear a 10+ pound bass guitar for 40 hours a week and feel no ill effectsJeeze man, you guys act like 60 is one foot in the grave. Go work out or something.
My first electric bass was one of these Squire classic vibe P's. I really loved it. Dunno other's thoughts on these....View attachment 3543798
