I based my stab on headstock shape, but I'm not betting any money or beer.

He had a sig bass he was selling at NAMM many years ago that was shaped like a crescent moon with a P pickup.

Looks like MFD's but I think not.
Body does look like a Yammy.

Who knows? At that point there were probably several builders dying to get their models in Louis' hands - & thumb.

It was a Yamaha. And it had dual humbuckers. I listened very carefully to the current TRBX504 and 505 and it sounds similar to the bass he used together with George Duke.

Didn't Larry Bunker (Bunken?) have something to do with the Trekker basses? I'd swear there was a connection between Larry's "tension-free necks" and a Louis Johnson signature bass.

Maybe I'm conflating a bunch of unrelated crap...

You remember correctly, late nineties. I've never come upon a Bunker neck, but have always been intrigued.
