What basses do you absolutely recommend to others?

I usually go with a USA Peavey Cirrus in this case.

Because.... to ME they have the best playability, balance and tone. I'll miss ol' blue until she returns to me one day (pretty sure I'll never see that bass again).

I used to suggest the basses that I play.


But the many don't want to take a risk and order online a bass that they can't find in a store and play first.

So now I recommend NOTHING!

But if they happen to discover the basses that I have and ask me about them.Sure!
But otherwise.............

Fender Precision Bass, MIM...or even a Squier.

Save your money. Spend a few hundred on a MIM or Squier, mod it a bit, and use the rest of the money you would've spent on a more expensive bass...on a trip. Treat your spouse or girlfriend or kids or whoever you love to a nice meal. Treat them better than a bloody bass guitar.

Fender MIJ/CIJ PB70 Ash with maple or rosewood fretboard because:

1. Can be found used at very low price.
2. The build quality is impeccable.
3. The type 'A' neck is FUNKTASTIC (best bass neck Fender has designed IMO).
4. They have got the P bass vibe and do constitute a very good platform for modding if desired.

I can't see anyone going wrong with the following basses (I have owned or at least gigged with all of them at one point). Of course, a P with tapes isn't the best choice for funk, etc.

Used MIK squier HM series

Slightly more$, good bang for buck:

MIM fender jazz/p
Ibanez sr500 or higher
*Used fender hwy 1/american special
Used Ebmm SUB ray/sterling
Steinberger spirit xt2


Higher budget good value lifetime basses:

1995 or later American standard P or Jazz
late 90s-early 2000 Warwick FNA (or corvette pro line, corvette standard active)
CIJ geddy Lee signature jazz bass
Gibson SG shortscale
mid 80s Yamaha BB series neck through

Bigger bucks but still reasonable, lifetime basses:

EBMM stingrays, sterlings, classics, really can't go wrong if you can afford one.

*= never owned personally. The rest I own or have owned at some point.

The best quality to price ratio has to go to the USA peaveys, especially the ones with the 2 piece neck construction, very stable. Electronics are good on them as well.
