Theres some funny patriotism going on in this thread, and some legitimate questions too!
Fokof, yeah pretty sure PT 9 can have more. In fact I think I've had 16 going into pt 7.4... whats the version you have that limits to 8?
A sequencer is a very similar thing, and FL studio can record OK, ableton is on the same page as Fl studio and records ver competently.
I run logic 'in all its glory' daily on a laptop for commercially released projects. Many sessions leave the studio I work at and end up being finished (with a comparable project size to a PT HD system) on my macbook pro.
For REAL big job editing pro tools is still the way forward for me. When time is money and mistakes/errors are not tolerated pro tools feels the most solid for BIG edits. I'm very happy slicing up everything and putting it back together in PT safe that I'll experience barely any wierdness and errors. Logic I LOVE and I use every day, but I just can't reley on it in this fashion. Its comp folders and flex editing is great if all is as it should be, band wise, but the safety of playlists, fluidity of groups and implimentation of fades is vital for really big edits, especially when the edits have to be FLAWLESS!
Also, come on Logic, lack of destructive fx? No tidy display of regions? Bugs? PT has had this sorted for years!
That said, I LOVE logic, so many great features. If a band is good and doesn't require heavy editing I'm happy to stay in logic throughout. I'll even bear the irrational take folder bugs and the way that certain features fight against each other.
Not many modern pros feel tied to PT because 'its what you have to use'. Its a legitimate choice based on how solid it is, and how good the editing feels. Get quick with PT and everything else feels like a hassle. However once Logic gets that right I'll be the first to move and make use of its other numerous advantages, feature wise.
So for me, PT at work, logic at home, PT 9 at home when I can buy it, then it will be Logic just for anything I have time to play with. Untill logic sorts out the quirks that is, when I'll migrate permanently.
Spent a long time just using cubase and it still has some features I miss today! Especially region specific gain handles with instant visualisation on the waveform. The EASIEST way to ride a vocal quickly!
Fundamentally, every DAW is great these days, choose what you wanna use and ignore anyone saying strong opinions against one or the other, it normally means they've haven't worked enough on it!
