What do you think about my band's singer?

While there is some great information here for you to absorb, Key/pitch/etc

Theres a good bit of cranky old guy opinion youd be best smiling and walking past. Like kicking your friend out of the band. You can find plenty of recordings on the net now of bands very early on, often before their first official records and some of them are pretty bad. But they stuck hard to it and were there for each other and that counts for something. Its often easier to practice and take lessons than it is to find someone you truly have a connection with and enjoy playing with

You're still young, you got passion and drive and people to play with, and clearly arent afraid to put yourself out there

Man, I'm impressed, I didn't expect such a big response. Thank you guys, I mean, most of the feedback is quite negative, but it is still feedback.
Am I gonna fire my singer? Hell, no, I still like his vocals, a lot, and as someone said, he is kind of the fire behind the band.
Am I gonna tell him to keep getting lessons? Yeah, sure.

You guys are awesome.

I think he will come around.. just needs some hard work.

if someone really plays keys/piano , they should be able to hear pitches a bit better .. ?!!? it can be very simple ... sit at the piano with any cheap chromatic tuner that has a built in mic ... play a note , then sing the same note ... watch the tuner ... !!! you actually need to train your ears/brain to really hear the correct pitch ... then get the 'muscle memory' in your vocal chords to match a pitch ...

I think it's perfectly fine to play around with , or mess around with pitch and/or timing for a specific reason ... ! BUT , ... I think , .. you need to learn to sing in tune and play well before you take such liberties !

another old fart here ... at 57 , ... just not my cup of tea ... being good at anything takes lots of practice

My profile pic sorta gives me away, but I'm a huge Darkthrone fan. I'd recommend listening to the newer albums by them if you want to hear great punk influenced metal vocals. Celtic Frost too of course. Vocals are great, but aren't technically demanding. Motorhead too! Gruff, gnarly vocals, but they fit the song which is most important.

I usually would never say anything negative about someones music because it's great that they are making it. But since you asked, he is really really bad at singing/songwriting. Now if you're doing this for fun as a local band then go have fun with it. I filled in for a few bands with horrible singers and felt bad because they actually thought they had a chance at a record contract (do they exist anymore lol). As long as you know to limit your expectations to start with then it's fun.

Kinda getting a Chuck Mosely vibe here, lots of atonal growling and shouting and more speaking than singing.

I'd say "tell him to keep taking lessons" and leave it at that.
