what do you use for a practice rig?

I am trying to decide between leaving a cheap combo amp at our rehearsal space or getting a duplicate cab and lugging around my amp head..

On one hand I want to practice with as similar a rig to what I gig with. On the other hand, I don't want the extra hassle and wear and tear caused by taking the amp back and forth all the time.

Just curious what others use..

i personally leave my "big rig" (small by some standards here( at my space to practice with. for one band anyway. i have an ampeg b328 i picked up here a while ago that is a great practice/small jam/coffeeshop gig amp. I could probably get by most of the time with that, but i don't play in loud rock/metal bands

THIS! At lower volume, for both bass and guitar. :D :D :bassist:

Cheers!

Do you mean a rehearsal space rig or do you mean an "at home 'shedding" rig? For the former I have a 4x10 cab and 400 watt solid state head or a 100 watt tube head that I can leave behind . For the latter I have a Fender RAD Bass amp that's unfortunately out on a long loan, so I use the 400 watt head into my Ampeg PortaBass 1x10.

For a rehearsal rig, either don't be in too big a hurry to get rid of your old stuff when you upgrade or keep your eye on Craig's List for bargains on something loud enough to leave at the space.

practice/small gigs: GK MB150E

Bar gigs: GK 800rb with SWR 8x8 cab

Everything else: Ampeg SVT/VR with 8x10 cab

Sorry, I thought you meant at home. The GK combo stays at home and the SVT stays at the practice pad. I wouldn't waste time lugging it around and when I'm at home I'm always very quiet.

I leave a cheaper combo amp (Carvin PB100-15) at the practice space.

PB100-10 here! How's the 15 for volume?? The single 10 kinda blows. It's not bad running my 410 cab, but it just doesn't move enough air with the single speaker.

It weighs something like 30lbs though, and that was the reason I bought it in the first place!

I use my Mesa/Schroeder for jams at practice space, and my Bass pod XT live through headphones for practice solo (or sometimes my GK Backline 112...which I use if I go to other folks' places to jam).

I find the 15" helps a lot - moves enough air for our rehearsals. Of course, I play with a rational guitarist who uses a 30 watt single 12" tube amp for rehearsal. No way that little Carvin would keep up with what SOME people consider to be "rehearsal volume" - Marshall stacks and such. :scowl:

If by "practice" you mean how you learn stuff at home, then I use a micro mixer with my bass and computer connected and a pair of headphones.

No I don't mean at home. I mean for rehearsing with the full band for a gig.

Our old rehearsal area was my basement, so I never worried about it. I don't want to leave my "big" rig at someone else's place in case I need it for an impromptu side thing. Nor do I want to haul it everywhere I go.

Since I recently upgraded, I am trying to decide between keeping my old setup for practicing or craigslisting it and getting a duplicate cab. Just thought someone with more experience would have an opinion. :D

Oh, sorry, I was confused. I thought you meant at home. This is my rehearsal/live rig:

My 1973 or 1974 (in this pic, it's the '74) Super Bass head into JCM 800 Bass Series model 1520 4x12 (top) and JCM 800 Bass Series model 1551 2x15 cabs. This is an older pic. I've restored the cabs to stock config (black grill cloth with white Marshall logos).

Cheers!
