What does Modded effect pedals mean?

I keep seeing people posting that their store-bought pedals have been "modified" what does this mean exactly? should it be something I should look into for mine?

It means they've been tweaked to sound differently than they would normally. This could be a good thing or bad, I'd stray away from it if you don't get a chance to hear it.

It means they have been altered in some way. Some examples: bass boost more drive, extra tone pot, balanced XLR out, components changed to sound like the vintage version of the pedal they have, etc.

ah gotcha. was just wondering if it was more of a mod like upgraded the switch or knobs etc.. but I guess it could be all the above.

most def if somebody is selling a modded pedal i would want to hear and play on it to see how it sounds (or if it even works right)

The modifications may or may not be useful to you, and the quality of the mods is always something to consider. Decide for yourself if they're improvements. I have a couple modded pedals and while I appreciate the changes made (professionally done) they may not work for everyone.

Mod example (useful to yours truly): I had the internal trimpots made accessible from the outside. So from a one-knob pedal, it became a 3-knob pedal, easily tweakable, hence more useful.

It'll depend on the pedal, so you better ask seller for specifics. True bypass is popular on Boss pedals as is switching some internal components to achieve better or more specific sound or to cop some boutique pedal for less. Sometimes pedals are re-housed for more rugged or smaller box. Sometimes there are additional controls added.
I have a modded EHX BassBalls where the internal bias controls for the lo and hi sweeps are moved for external control, turns it into another pedal all together.

I've done a bunch of these mods for guitar. They made a HUGE improvement over the stock Boss pedals.
