What effect is he using on the bass here?



I know the guy probably spent years dialing in the right settings on 15 pedals, but I want it in a preset on a $99 multi-effect pedal!!

I've never actually used pedals in my 17 years playing, but this guy makes it sound like another instrument and plays it that way. I want to start noodling.

I have no idea what is going on. All I know is that I can't stand electronic music, but this kicks so much a$$ I can't believe it!!! JoJo Mayer is maybe one of the best kit players I have ever seen!!

I want to play with a drummer like that!!!!

It sounds like the bass player is using a lower octave effect, a "slow gear" (attack delay), and a wah.

A lot of the knob twiddling sounds like sampled sounds run through a delay set just short of self-oscillation mayhem.

The way each note swells (it almost sounds like he's playing in reverse), tells me it's a "slow gear" type effect. You can get a similar effect by using a volume pedal, but it's still happening even when he steps back from the board. With a EHX Bass Micro Synth and a wah pedal, you could probably replicate his sound pretty well.

But, that video credits John Davis on bass, and it does look like him and not Tim Lefebvre, so who really knows?!?

My initial guess was octave -> fuzz -> wah or BMMS -> exp. pedal filter. From the above info it would seem it's somewhere between the two.


BTW, the "guy twiddling knobs" is the sound engineer and my guess is that he's controlling various sources such as instruments and samples and cues them up and mixes them in. He's also panning channels manually and is credited with "effects" and "real time audio deconstruction" - whatever that means.
