What else do i need?

Hey all,

i'm very much a n00b to recording and i am looking to set up a mini recording studio in a spare room. So far all i've got the list of things i need is:

Apple Mac with garage band or other program:
MI-DI Keyboard of some sort
MI-DI Drumpad
Quality Headphones and Microphones

Is there something where i can plug my bass and guitar into which will record on garage band?

i really need some help, what else do i need?

You need an audio interface, I'm using an Apogee One with my Mac.

i have a cheap note book so im going to buy a mac for other things regardless, so i figured id use it for recording.

Almost any audio interface will accept normal 1/4 patch cables and standard "XLR" mic cables as input, and should come with a usb or firewire (depending on the interface) cable to connect to your computer.

I would highly recommend something to listen through besides headphones - decent quality studio monitors, if they are in your budget. They will be a huge asset in hearing your recordings accurately, and achieving better sounds and mixes.

this is what I have. actually I have a UX1. it's pretty good, although you need a decently fast computer to run it. running it on the average laptop (which it will do) gets you occasional "pauses" during recording...which obviously screws that take.

i like it. it came with "ableton live lite", which I still use & like ok. I've never had garageband but most people who use it love it.

i'm going into a professional studio tomorrow & they use ableton. it was cool b/c i was able to save some of the tracks & put them in dropbox (file sharing)...and we're planning on using those tracks for "scratch tracks" b/c they're already in the right key & the right tempo with a click track. pretty cool. saves me time in the studio as well as work recording all the scratch guitars & vocals again.

a ux1 is one of the cheapest ways to get into home recording, and i have a decent sound from it.

$80 ux1 on clearance from MF with free gearbox software & free ableton live lite
$6 mic on clearance from hastings
$15 headphones
2 $10 cables
all running on my $300 toshiba laptop (with the occasional hiccup)

and my demos sound as good as any demos here. great for getting ideas down.

I forgot to add that I have a decent drum machine (alesis sr16) but i never use it to record. i use the virtual drum machine on ableton & it sounds pretty good. i dont even use a drum pad. i have a keyboard as well that i never use (b/c my music is guitar-heavy)
