I think there were issues with a bass sale (maybe more than one) where money was collected but never delivered. I think the DP was snorted up someone's nose.
Steve Barr, the owner of the site, got into some substance abuse troubles and it had an effect on his ability to deliver on some orders.
Last I heard he was lecturing on how to deal with addiction, turning his mistakes into positive action. I give him credit for his honesty and owning his errors.
That was a few years ago, haven't heard anything since.
It was a great site and community and I miss it.

I remember him posting pictures of himself licking various basses. Thought that was a little weird- a red flag for sure.

The DP will ALWAYS be a treasured memory for what it taught me and clued me onto.
The Greco's here are a direct result of this post:
Which resulted in getting this to my door for about $225 back then :
That experience led to international GAS for a while which schooled me on how to do that(via Ishibashi, Guitar Shelter, and one Japan Auction Center) AND how to sell from my eBay account that way without getting burned.
It also had a LOT of info about Gibson basses since more than a few members had very large collections.

How does that Greco sound? Looks amazing.
Glad he's doing better. Sucks to have your downward spiral documented semi in public like that.
Those dp Laklands were really cool though. Always wanted to have or try one.

I started playing bass again in early '07, and the DP had seen one or two mass exoduses by that point; I think it only lasted another year or so. I signed up, but it had kind of a weird, dark vibe to it by then, so I didn't hang out there much. Glad to hear Steve Barr is apparently on the mend.
@deepestend These Greco's appear to be maple body and the pickups sound very much like the old Gibson T-Birds. The neck pickup can do mudbucker OR T-bird roar/growl depending on how you play it. Setup is V-V-V with no tone so you get your tone by blending the pickups.
I joined the Dude Pit towards the end of the peak. I probably wouldn't have joined this place if the forum didn't keep moving and people kept leaving.
I have an affinity for the 'ol DP because it was my first experience where I felt a community among fellow bass players. There were some cool things - bass education seminars, fun connections to manufacturers, camaraderie, ability to buy/sell bass items. I thank Steve for that. And it then led me here.
The Red J Bass that originated my user name ended up with Steve Dude Barr as a test platform for pickups. No telling where it may be now.
Glad to hear he is in recovery, I know all about that issue. I respect anyone who takes responsibility for their actions and stands back up. No matter how bad they may have messed up.

Great to see some of the old DP alumni on here. I was a regular there too. Maybe some of you would remember this community favourite......it is the infamous Karl Hoyt Funkifizer Bass. I think it was a rite of passage that each member had to own this bass at least once. I've had since 2006-07 when a lot things starting getting weird with Steve.
Last straw for me, when I knew something was definitely wrong, was when I bought my 69 Jazz bass from Steve that he had on consignment. Steve put it in a bag threw tape around it and shipped to me like that. It was badly damaged and never heard from him again.
The old alumni started a new forum but I can't remember what it is called. Many of the old guys are still there.
Karl Hoyt still writes to me every odd year trying to buy back the 45 year old Funkifizer pickups......I'm keeping the funk.
