What happened to WAL?

MT, I know what you mean about an "ambiguous" fretted-fretless sound on record (ermm CD). I can only recall seeing Forbes play a fretted (cherry burst) Precision live (though with a black, maple-necked fretless waiting in the wings). Maybe it's the playing with a pick on the laquer coated maple fingerboard that gives it that quality. Whatever it is, I really like Forbes work on Sons and Fascination, Glittering Prize, New Gold Dream, etc. Those were good times for some great in your face fretless playing (Palladino, Webb, Gardiner, Karn, Coughlan, Forbes, Giblin, etc.). Wistfully, an ageing new waver.

circa New gold dream he switched between the fretted cherry burst and the black fretless- and in the video for "Waterfront" he's using the fretless.

he used a lot of chorus/flanger, so the fretted had a touch of fretless-ness to it too.

Thanks, Messrs Turtle and Fan; as I keep dragging this discussion off-topic I'll only post a brief reply, which is that I'm curious as to how often I think "hey, that sounds good" and it turns out to be a P. Maybe I should just sell the other basses and stick to a P and perhaps I'll finally be happy!
